Default Kyla\'s Birth Story

Sunday January 2nd 8:30 pm Arrived home from dinner at CorbinÃ*s parents, 9:00 pm went to the
bathroom and thought I lost a little fluid, but thought no way, then a little more, and I knew it was
the fluid. Went to find Corbin who was getting Caleb ready for bed, and I said ìHow would you like
to go back to GrandmaÃ*s Caleb?î and Corbin asked why, and I told him my water broke. He did not
believe me at all, so I said ìWould you like to feel the wet spot in my pants?î and he said ìyesî, so
I pulled my pants down, and as I did, water started pouring out like a water fall. He was completely
shocked, IÃ*m not sure why, but I really wasnÃ*t.

10:30 pm we got to the hospital after packing and calling people. Grandma met us there to take
Caleb. I got checked around 11 and I was only at 1 cm and 60% effaced, but gushing water every
where. It just did not stop coming. I had always figured that I would walk around, use a birthing ball,
etc. to get labor going before being subjected to Pitocin again. I had not counted on the fact that the
water could just keep going and going. I had to basically sit on a towel and change it every 20
minutes or so. They told me to see what happened in an hour and go from there.

Midnight-no contractions yet, barely dilated to 1.5 cm, and no more effaced. Water was still pouring
out so I still couldnÃ*t get up. I knew the Pitocin was coming. After about 20 minutes of the Pitocin,
her heart rate dropped to around 90 with every contraction so they stopped the Pitocin. They watched
for a while to see what would happen, she calmed down, but the contractions completely stopped
as well. I knew at that point that I was facing a c-section, something I was completely terrified of.
They decided to try one last thing before making that decision. They said because I had lost so much
fluid, she was probably getting completely squished with every contraction. So they gave me an
epidural, and put in internal monitors, and that allowed them to also put more fluid back in so she
had some water to swim in. They watched that for a while and her heart was stable.

4:00 am-after seeing that she was staying stable, they decided to try the Pitocin again, but do it very
gradually. I was only to 2 cm at this point. They came in every half hour and turned it up a tiny bit.
By 7:00 am I was fully dilated and effaced, but she hadnÃ*t even dropped. So we waited another hour
to let her drop some. By 8:20 I was pushing, even though she was still up pretty high. It took 4 sets
of 3 pushes, about 5 minutes, and she was out. The Dr. pulled her head out and sucked her nose and
throat, and then she let Corbin grab a towel and pull her the rest of the way out. So her daddy was
the first person in the world to hold her, and to check to see if she was a boy or a girl. I had meant
to ask the nurse to take a picture of him but I totally forgot and I am so bummed about that.

I had no tears or episiotomy and I havenÃ*t even been sore because she wasnÃ*t even putting pressure
on me for longer than 5 minutes. I canÃ*t believe how easy it is this way! LOL. It was a really long
night but totally worth it for that kind of delivery! IÃ*ve hardly had any bleeding, and I feel better than
I did pregnant. Nursing is kind of off and on. She isnÃ*t real consistent yet, sometimes she goes for
an hour straight and sometimes it 5 minutes at a time, but 5 times in an hour. But I am still farther
than I got with Caleb so that is good news.

Caleb is doing better about this now. The first few days were pretty hard. He wanted nothing to do
with me or the baby, and was a complete DaddyÃ*s boy, throwing enormous fits pretty much all day.
But once daddy started school and we got back to our routine, he has calmed down and is being very
helpful and very careful around her.

I canÃ*t believe how tiny she is! Preemie clothes are even big on her, I donÃ*t know why cause they are
supposed to be for 5 pound babies and she is over 6 pounds. Oh well, she is a precious tiny little
thing and that means sheÃ*ll look like a baby a little bit longer. ThatÃ*s all I can think of for now, thank
you for all your nice thoughts and kind words! I will have to get Caleb and Kyla all ìcutiefiedî and
take lots of pics for you!

Sounds a bit like Alex, with the non-dropping & needing fluid to be added.

How great you didn't have to push for long!

That's great about Corbin & the delivery, (though it's not something we'd choose) I'm glad you had such a special moment!

I am so happy for you!!

Sounds like a pretty ideal birth!! Hopefully I won't have to push too long either.

I think it would be really cool if Eric could pull the baby out - but i'd be afraid he'd drop him/her (I love him, but he's a little clumsy )

I can't wait to see the pics of Kyla and Caleb.

WOW! what a story! Thanks so much for sharing Michelle!

I think if we decided to have kids, doug would probably be all gung ho about "catching" the kid...i dunno about cutting the umbilical cord though - he might get a bit squimish there! hahaha

also, as a side note related to Caleb's feelings - about two weeks after my brother came home from the hospital, I asked my parents when his mommy and daddy were going to come pick him up. I had had enough of him already!
