and I hear if you have a girl (in China), it's still a bad omen right?

Figure if you have no girls, you can't keep repopulating! so go fig!

How can Hong Kong have so many people and yet no healthcare system? what do people do when they get sick or fall or what not? It sounds like the costs are exponential!

I heard that China recently relaxed their laws and if you are re-married and there are step children involved, you are permitted to have one child with your spouse.

I haven't heard of the rule you mention but generally it is one per household but you can buy anything in China! They have now also allowed women of a certain age range, living in certain parts of Shanghai with a set income level to have 2 children if they want.

Kristie - I won't tell you what happens to female babies (not all but it is still common)...lets just say its a little worse than being a bad omen. Now there are such shortages of women in some parts that men who want to marry (and produce a son to work the land) need to pay a large dowry to the family.

Mainland China is another world unlike anything you or I know.

I don't doubt it! Just reading their news via the internet says quite a lot!
