Default Burlington, VT??

Does anyone here (besides Roz ) know anything about BVT? We are considering moving there in the next 6 months or so and neither of us have spent much time in the Northeast. We're looking for the scoop!
Thanks for any info!

There isn't a base there, but Jason is based out of JFK and jetblue has three flights (possible adding a fourth) a day and it would make his commute SO MUCH better!

The six hour redeye commute is killing him (literally, I'm afraid) so we are just trying to get closer to his base without having to live in NYC.

The property and income taxes may kill us, though. Right now we don't pay income tax and the property tax isn't too outrageous, but Jason did the figures and if we move to BVT, in a house comparable to what we live in now, it would be an extra $900 a month in income and property taxes. YIKES!!!!

I don't know how much you guys are set on VT, but my grandparents live in New Hampshire in the Manchester area which is really nice. I don't know how frequent flights are to JFK from there, but I would imagine pretty often. I love NH the people there are beyond a doubt the nicest (as a group) that i have ever met! They also don't have any sales tax, but I don't know about income or property taxes. anyway, just an idea for you to consider!

That cracks me up because we talked about NH, but a few people that we talked to said it is really hard to make friends there. They said that once you DO make friends, they are your friends for life, but its really hard to break into their tight knit community! HUH..I'll have to talk to Jason a little more about it.

Kristie-
Our criteria is to have an easy commute for Jason, in order to do that, we pretty much feel like we have to live in a Jetblue city. So, our options are limited. We talked about Vegas or Denver, but that doesn't solve the long commute problem. He could get based in FLL and we could live in Fla, but neither of us really love that idea. We talked about Charleston, SC, but that means an off line commute and its kind of expensive there also. So...we just don't know what we're gonna do. Right now it still looks like VT is our first choice, but the taxes are scary!!!! (as are the heating bills in teh winter!!!)
But I guess we could find other ways to stay warm! Oh, that was so bad!!! Sorry! I've just been looking for an opportunity to use that one!

I visited some friends there last summer for a few days, so here's my 2 cents...

Burlington is a nice college town on the edge of Lake Champlaign (sp). The lake was filled with people sailing & boating, and weather was pretty good for this from what I remember. The house I stayed at was a few blocks from the college so walking to bars, cafes, shops and parks was quicker than driving. I really like cities where a car is not a necessity, and you can get outside without driving.

Weather wise, I think they are getting the same cold weather I'm getting in Rochester. And boy am I cold, can't wait to get back to AZ.

If you can hop on Continental. CommutAir, flies Beach 1900's out of there daily directly to Albany, NY, and they hop all over NY, MA, etc. Good, for checking out the big cities.

Seemed like a really nice city that I would love to move to except there are no jobs for me.

Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone for all of the information. Jason and I decided to put talks of a move off for at least a month. He is bidding a different type of schedule and we are going to see how this helps with the commute. We truly love where we live and don't really want to move.

We did a little research in BVT and it appears we probably can't afford to live there. If we were to buy a comparably priced home in BVT, with property taxes and income taxes (WA doesn't have state income tax), we would pay an additional $1000 a month just in taxes....not sure we could really swing that right now!

Thanks again!

Hi Jessica,

I am a pilot that works and lives here in NH. At my previous employer I flew a lot of Manchester, NH to New York trips that always seemed full of JetBlue pilots and flight attendants commuting to work. It is very easy to commute from either Manchester or Boston. Boston is under an hour drive from much of southern NH.

NH has no income tax, and no sales tax on goods. The only down side is property taxes. If you want any info on the real estate prices/taxes here, I also have my real estate license and can get you some info.
