Doula?

Does anyone have any experience with a doula? We have been considering hiring one for when we get home from the hospital. However, there is no standard for the title. I could hang a sign on my door right now and start tomorrow if I wanted to become a doula. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi! I'm new here but thought I chime in here with a suggestion. I believe that there are certified Birth Doulas and Postpartum Doulas. I haven't used one, but would have considered it if I didn't have my family in town after the birth of my second child. I used midwives for both of my sons births (at home) and I know that they had post-partum doulas that worked with them. My suggestion would be to contact some of the midwives in your area and see if they have anyone they would recommend.

I've never heard of a post-partum doula! what exactly are their duties?

I've only heard of the birthing doula's that help you thru delivery..

A post-patum doula usually provides education, support, meal preparation and light household duties for the family. They hold to the concept of "mothering the mother". They do most of the stuff the mother usualy does so that she can just focus on her newborn baby for those first precious days.

Well here is my reply to you that I posted like 2 weeks ago on the other board. LOL Don't know if you still need it but...

"I thought about w/ my first but dh wouldn't let me, and I should have ignored him and done it anyway. I think if I'd had a third party that was on "my side" and knew my wishes, things might have gone a lot differently. As far as suggestions, do some searches, there are a few sites that have lists w/ recomendations. I'd conduct interviews, find out how many births and what situations the doula has been in--like has she ever been in high risk and complicated births, or just "normal" routine ones? Perhaps get some referrals from previous clients! "
