Default AH-CHOO!

Uh, boy! Here we go! I stay sick from Fall until Spring! It stinks! Right now we are all sick! Both boys have this nasty cold and DH said his throat is starting to hurt! Argh!

Anyway, got a question for all the mommies out there. DS who is almost 4 mos. will not STAY asleep in his crib. He wakes up every 1/2 hr. or more crying. I've watched him and its like he startles himself. Older DS would do this but he'd go right back to sleep. Little Josh has to be comforted in order to settle. He doesnt need a whole lot of attention (i.e. being rocked back to sleep), but he does need to be patted on the back or talked to. In one way, its not so bad b/c he doesnt need a lot of soothing but on the other hand, we are exhausted b/c our sleep pattern is so broken!

Does my little problem make sense? Anyone out there have/had the same problem? What did you do about it?

Hope everyone is doing well. I've been so busy w/ the boys I havent had the chance to check the board daily.

One more trip and DH is off for 25 days!!! Vacation! Woo Hoo!

Well.....I have a friend w/ a 5 month old who is letting her baby cry it out. I did that at 8 months, but I personally couldn't do it under 6. First I'd try to make sure the baby is full, maybe it's time to start some cereal before bed? We also got the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium and he STILL uses it every night to soothe himself back to sleep. He can turn it on by himself, started that around 7 months I think. Also try white noise, swaddling, (if they can't move, they wake up less from accidental body jolts, KWIM? I may have made that term up lol) Does he take binkis? That's all I can think of for now, good luck!

Thanks Michele! I should have stated what we have tried in my last post. Here's what we have/have tried. We have a sound machine that plays white noise by his crib. He wont take a pacifier. Swaddling works but he manages to wiggle out and then wakes himself up. He takes (usually) a full feeding before bedtime. We also have one of those cribside aquariums which soothes him back to sleep but he's too little to be able to turn it on himself.

He isnt hungry throughout the night b/c we can get him back to sleep. Its just the constant waking up thats killin' us!

He redeems himself during the day though. He's a happy baby w/ a smile that lights up a room! Its hard for me to stay mad too long!

If you've gone through all that, if it were me, I'd just stick it out for a few months and then try to cry it out, if you are comfortable with that.

ok so i don't have kids and no idea what a white noise machine sounds like, but maybe just try something like a humidifier or fan instead of a fancy machine! what about those foam wedge thingys that are supposed to keep kids from flipping over or wiggling a lot? when my bro was a baby, he was real colicky so my parents would put a little bit of whisky into his nighttime bottle so he would sleep better. I don't know how comfortable you are with that but it worked for him. haha. (and he's still normal today) :-D

Sounds to me like you've covered all the bases. The only other thing that comes to mind is what position is he sleeping in? sometimes on their backs they startle more so than on their sides. I know with both of mine I couldn't get them to sleep for more than an hour at a time on their backs, I purchased one of those side positioners and voila, it was like magic!

LOL! I think we'll pass on the whiskey! We have a wedge which we use on and off. It doesnt help w/ the waking up part. We've tried all different positions too....guess we'll just have to let him mature a little & hopefully he'll grow out of it! Thanx for the suggestions everyone!

do you have a nightlight in the room? cuz i know i startle awake when I sleep with a light on vs no light on - even tho a nightlight helps the little ones, maybe he's more scared with the light on or maybe he startles awake thinking it's daytime?

We have a nightlight in there as he seems to do better with the light. He cries as though he's scared if the room is too dark.

Last night was the same. All we do is flip him from one side to the other and he goes right back to sleep. I wish he would just stay asleep though. Oh well....it could be worse. We could be up all night w/ colic like we were w/ our first one. I'll take this over colic anyday!

Thanks again for the ideas!

maybe instead of the night light in his room you could put it in the hallway and close his door partway so a bit of light can still get in, but its dimmer than having the light in the room.
