Default Homemade baby food

Does anyone make homemade baby food?

I just bought a Magic Bullet so I could make some food for Jack. I just made his favorite- Butternut Squash! I bought a big squash and steamed it and then pureed it. I made 46oz of squash for about $3.50 (I bought it at $.99 a lb., I am not sure how many lbs it was since of course I throw out my receipt today but I figure it was around 3-3.5 lbs). I figured I payed .07 an oz vs. .15 an oz if I bought it. The real reason I made it was because I wanted to make him some homemade food. I just put them in ice cube trays and now I will be able to give him homemade squash for a while!

If anyone is interested here is a really cool website with recipes and information http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/

If anyone else makes homemade food, do you have any good recipes or tips?

Yup, I make most of Zack's food. He too loves the butternut squash, but I've found if you roast it in the oven, the sugars carmelize and its that much sweeter! I don't think I really have any tips other than its a good idea to also give baby canned baby food once and awhile. We found with Jason that he was so used to the fresh taste of his homemade food he pretty much refused all prepackaged. That made traveling ROUGH! I overheard DH telling someone the other day that at first he thought I was just being an overachieving Mom but then he tried the canned stuff and thought it was horrible! I have found that the Earth's best foods are pretty tasty though -and cheapest if you buy them in the flats!

I make my own, I don't really use "recipes", I just grind up whatever. I have these and I like them better than ice cube trays: One Step Ahead Baby - Jumbo Baby Cubes

I made a lot of my kids food as well. I really liked the book "Blender Baby Food". It had a lot of good recipes in it.

I also liked to roast veggies and some fruits in the oven. A fav. of the kids was squash/apples and squash/pears that was roasted in the oven. I would throw a little spice (nutmeg maybe) on them as well. They were yummy.

In the winter when I couldn't get fresh fruit (or it was way too expensive) i would use frozen fruit. My kids loved the Cherries I did. I just thawed them out, then pureed them. I either gave them just the cherries or mixed it in with other fruit.

I use my cuisenart thing to blend anything and everything! o specific recipes. Victoria loves it! She just smacks her lips! She espc. loves pot roast with vegies! I do keep on hand jarred mixed vegies so that if something is kind of thick I add that to it.
Thankfully she hasn't given me an odd look, YET, if we are out and I give her the jarred.

Michelle, I love those, did you get them on line or where you able to find them in the store?

I started T with the store bought stuff, but then mashed up what ever I had. We are doing a hugh garden this year, so I am planning on doing alot more homemade/freezer stuff for Stevie. Every year we make homemade applesause with my mom, nobody in our family can stand to eat the stor bought stuff.

Robyn, with the ice cube trays, do you leave them in there or after they freeze do you transfer them to bags?

We just went and pick fresh cherries and blueberries.

I would like to do some cherries, but did they give your kids the "runs"?

I did the ice cube trays also. I would let the food freeze in the ice cube trays for about 24 hours, then I put them into zip lock bags.

I can't remember if Cherries gave my kids the runs. They have had the fresh (not pureed) and pureed one's and from what I remember, they didn't cause the runs. But, they haven't had them yet this summer, so its been at least a year since they have had them, thats why I can't remember. The Cherries and blueberries just give my kids really really dark poop.

I put them in ice cube trays overnight and I popped them out this morning and put the in a gallon size freezer bag (I didn't freeze 4oz so I could give him it today). I am going to do sweet potatoes tonight.

I just gave him some of the squash and he loved it.

I like that the jars have a lot of different flavors. Last night he had pinapple and glazed ham. Yummy! I wanted to eat it too. I know I won't be supermom and make everything, but it is so nice to be able to give him food that I know exactly what is in it.

A couple weeks ago I gave Victoria the pinapple glazed ham, and she loved it! It's quite tasty. She also likes the chicken noodle and something noodles. She says mmm after every bite.

Have you given Jack the Graduates puffs? Victoria loves the banana, the sweet potato, peach and corn. Actually I haven't come across anything that my little butterball doesn't like!
You don't have to try and be a supermom. You already are one by just doing what you are doing and attempting to do..
