| When your kids do something new and suprise you with it? I loved this phase with DD when she would use new words I had no idea she knew or did new things (physical type things) that I didn't know she could do. Well, this morning, DS surprised me with 2 new things. I was downstairs when I heard DS start to cry. It was the kind of cry that made me think he kind of hurt himself, but he quicky stopped, so I didn't think much more of it. A few min later, I hear a light switch flip and see the light is on for the stairs. I figured DD did it since a switch is right outside her door and she has just woken up too. I walk over to the stairs and there is DS (who is 14.5 mo) almost to the bottom. I could't believe it. This is the first time I've had a kid climb out of a crib. I had no idea that he was even trying to do something like this. Secondly, I had no idea he could walk down the stairs...and I mean walk like anyone else walks down the stairs (while he was holding onto the wall). I can't believe his little legs are long enough for that. This was his first time ever going down the stairs like that. I am just really thankful that he didnt get hurt climbing out of his crib or going down the stairs. But it was a huge surprise to see him just standing there at the bottom of the stairs when I was expecting him to be in his crib. I called DH to tell him and he wasn't so happy about it. ![]()

| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | Hahhaha, that's precious (and nerving), amelia! My mom would love to tell you the story about me, when I was just a touch older than your son. I did the same thing. Crawled out of my crib, boogied down stairs, and then went to the kitchen, where my mom was. My mom turned around and saw me w/ this HUGE grin on my face. She played it so well. She smiled back and responded w/ something like, "Well hi there! How did you get down here? Why don't you show me?!" So she whisked me back upstairs and evidently I repeated my whole route. Once she saw what I did (crib to changing table, to some other table, etc ...), she put me back in the crib and immediately rearranged the furniture in the room!! ![]() |

| oh my...i'm just waiting for that to happen at our house too! there is such a fine line between over-parenting and letting go. i constantly find myself, stopping and just letting the girls do something (even when i know they are going to tip over or fall down - without getting incredibly hurt, obviously).

| Oh, you are lucky. When my one year old crawled out of the crib, there was a toy right outside his crib. That is what his head first dive landed on, splitting his front tooth right up the middle. It was such an odd split that our pediatric dentist couldn't remove it. We had to take him to an oral surgeon that wasn't covered by insurance. 500 dollars later, he has one top front tooth missing. We had a gate for the top of our stairs when we lived in a two story. Now that I live in a one story, I am so glad I don't have to worry about the stairs issue. Instead, it is moving stools over to make a hotdog in the microwave or making smoothies because they are thirsty! Always something, isn't it? |
