| Tomorrow our daughter will be 15. She REALLY has her heart set on getting a snake. I overheard her tell a friend that she was going to get it for her b-day. I've got to admit that the snake she wants is rather pretty. It is light purple with yellow bands but it is still a snake. I told her yesterday to pick out something else because she is not going to get anymore animals. I'm not looking foward to tomorrow night. What is the most unusual B-day present you have asked for or received? For one of my birthdays Jim bought me a Madagascar millipede. He and the kids were so excited and when I opened my eyes and saw this 10" thing in an aquarium in front of me...well they did not get the reaction they thought i would give. I jumped up from the table and in the dead silence that followed I saw 6 worried, sad faces. I quickly told them all that I like, how neat, what a SURPRIZE! Thanks! How about the rest of you ladies? | A bug for your b-day? YIKES!! I don't think my DH would even THINK to try that! I have an issue with creepy crawly things! yyyuullllccchhh!!! I've been racking my brain and I can't think of an "unusual" gift I've recieved. My ex once got me a vacum for my b-day and a new washer/dryer for Christmas. For our anniversary, he got me Tae-Bo tapes. None of which I asked for....did I mention he was my EX??? |

| Admin/Owner ![]() | yeah.. that right there would make someone my EX too!! Jessica! haha Lori - a bug for your birthday? that is incredibly interesting.. what made them think of getting you that? I've always puchased gifts in the sense that if they didn't like it, then I'd keep it and maybe that's what they were thinking? I think the most interesting birthday i've ever had was not having one! My hubby and his family don't celebrate birthdays like my family does... for his family, it's just a regular celebration where the entire family gets together for dinner (nothing really special, no gifts, no cake) whereas my family goes all out, cake, presents etc... so when we were dating, he thought his type of birthday celebration was acceptable and it took a few years to kinda compromise and created a new definition....we don't go all out for birthdays because to us everyday is our birthday and it helps in that we don't take eachother forgranted...so it works well! |

| Hmm, we don't go all out for birthdays either. My family usually sends a card & a telephone call. That's it. Bill's family however thinks that you not only have to send a card and call, but that you MUST buy a present too. They go overboard (I think) with gifts on every occasion. The most unual gift I've ever gotten....well, I *asked* for a vacuum cleaner for Christmas one year. I asked for a dustbuster for my last birthday, it's something I REALLY wanted, and I use a lot. I did get a sapphire necklace for our anniversary last year, that was nice. I guess I've never gotten anything really 'out there'. |

| I got batteries in my stocking one year; they went with the maglite that was under the tree. I got DH (before he was DH) bathroom towels for his new bathroom he and his dad had just remodeled. :HB3: :hb2: :HB1: |

| Hi all! Short story behind the b-d bug: About 4 years ago we were in a pet store buying a small lizard. I saw the bug and mentioned that it would make a better pet because it is quiet, slow, and eats veggies. 5 months later they gave me the bug. I have learned to be very careful about what I say. Jim called Sun. PM from NRT and we talked again about our daughter and the snake. Vickie is bright, beautiful, and feminine. At her age we could be dealing with more serious issues. (A friend of ours has a girl the same age and put her on birth control at 14 and a half.) I took her to the pet store Monday morning and a clerk talked with us for about a hour. I took him aside and asked if he could bring out a mouse for her to hold. My thinking at this time was that she would not be able to feed a cute furry animal to a snake and that would be the end of it. It worked (or so I thought) and we left the store. Jim called about an hour later and I was patting myself on the back for being so clever. We talked more about Vickie and her way with animals. He went on and on about how good she was with them. So, to wrap this up - there is a snake in the house. It is not the small purple and yellow one. It is a Ball Python and is close to a foot and a half long. Vickie came home from school yesterday and said almost all of the boys hate snakes. Hmmm...I like that. When she starts dating I may insist that she take the snake with her. I have held it with her close by. I know that I am going to have to get used to it. Jim has trips that can be up to 12 days long and he may not be here if it ever gets out of it's aquarium. When she gets out of school today we will be heading to the pet store to buy a furry little creature for the snake. I am not looking forward to this. | Jetgirls Ol' School Member | if you got a ball python that is already a foot and a half long...how big is this thing going to get?? And, like you said with your friends, it's all about putting things into perspective. My parents both flipped when i got my eyebrow pierced, but i put it in perspective for them - i'm not pg, not on drugs, nothing permanant (tattoos), I'm getting good grades in school etc, etc they settled down after that |
