I know that 7 or 8 seems early to talk about using a tampon but my niece was telling me that when she was in 5th grade (apx 10 years old) she went into the bathroom and found several of her friends freaking out. One of them was bleeding and they thought she was dying. Out of the 4 girls, Claire was the only one that knew what was going on and could calmly handle the situation. 10 years old seems a little young but according to her it isn't uncommon at all.

Apparently my sister did a better job the second time around. Further up in the thread I talked about her first talk with her son that wasn't quite as successful.

Another year or two and I'll be going there. I can't wait. NOT!

Nancy

Yeah, that is the dilema - I want her to be prepared, and know enough to take care of herself, but I don't want her overwhelmed or scared. I sure as heck don't want her to give a try just to see like BigSweetie mentioned.

Kristie- I like your idea, pass down the information... good parenting technique. LOL

My parents told me NOTHING about sex, etc! When I was 11 my mom handed me a box of pads and said "here- some day you'll need these". I read the instructions and still had no idea what the heck they were for! As for sex my mom gave me an artsy book that was sort of a "pop up" (yes I said pop up) book. I guess I don't need to tell you what popped up. As for pads, I remember trying them the first time, thinking it was gross and learned how to use tampons (myself!) the next day!
Yup, great parenting. I'm doind things differently with my kids!!

why not? maybe take her to see your obgyn and make sure she understands how it's supposed to work, so when she needs it there's no fear..if she knows exactly how it works, then it might also prevent TSS too (that'd be a question for Dana actually).

in fact, i never even thought about including an obgyn till now...that's a pretty neat idea - why, cuz they're doctors and it'll be more about anatomy and beauty than ickyness...

that's probably the other reason i never used those...TSS...it's scary to hear your mom say "you know...you gotta watch out for STDs, Pregnancy and TSS" (so many worries for such young girls!)

i also had one of those books that showed girls going through different stages of puberty and talking about what would happen at each one. When I got my period the first time, i was way excited, for about a day. then it was gross, and the next month i went into my mom's cabinet and found the tampons and figured it out myself (with the help of said book!)

I <3 tampons and can't stand using pads unless i absolutely have to!

Kristie,

I think she was talking about the girl that "tried" having sex at a very young age, 10 I think it was.

That is exactly what I was referring to - having sex just to see what it is all about.

Emily has been to the Dr. with me for OB visits. She has seen more Ultra Sounds than some PG women! She has never really questioned it though. She has watched "Baby Show" with my mother, but again, never really said anything about it.

I talk about everything with Emily. I have all my kids in the bathroom with me, and they all see us naked. I make sure that I am around when Emily is in the bathroom and shower too - I want her to be comfortable around me. I nurse around the kids too. Jeff did tell me that she kicks him out now - which shocked me. My Mom said the same thing, that Emily doesn't like to be naked around her anymore.

My Mom talked with my brother and I - nothing was off limits, and I want the same relationship with my daughters. I still talk to my Mom about things I would not talk to anyone else about. And thank GOD I have her!!

A pop-up book - I can't stop laughing. I'm so sorry, that must have been frightening for you at 11 years old.
