Default Toilet training a cat.

Okay, I put this up there with as weird as elimination communication between parents and children. However, our new kitty has decided that he doesn't want to cover up his number 2 when he leaves it in the box. We buy expensive, fancy litter so it will cover up the odor, and our cat doesn't want to use it. He leaves it on top for all the world to smell. And smell it does. I took a shower this morning, got out of the shower and the cat had done his business. It smelled so bad I wanted to get back in and shower again. His litter box is currently in our guest bathroom upstairs, near the toilet. My sister-in-law said that she has a friend who toilet trained her cat. I was wondering if anyone on here has done that or tried to and how they went about doing it. I also woke up last night to find the cat had gone number two, got some on his paw, and walked across our bedspread leaving smears along the way...YUCK! I scoop his litter box daily, sometimes twice, so it's never dirty for long. I'm not sure why he doesn't want to cover it up. The cat I had in college did!

Have you tried just a thin layer of litter? Or a covered box so they feel like they have to stay and finish the business--maybe even in a more private location?

They don't use the word "finicky" for no good reason (as any previous cat owner knows!!)
I've seen one person who toilet trained their cat and it's really bizarre! They never had another cat do it again...who knows why?

I know that I am not really being helpful here, so, sorry.... But, I don't think that elimination communication is weird at all... I litter box trained my dog, and I am confident that you can toilet train your cat! I am sure that there are some good websites! Go for it!

The guest bathroom is about as private as it's going to get for the cat. The only other area that would be more private would be our closet, and that's just not gonna happen. I really am leaning towards toilet training the cat. I think I'll start after the holiday's. The pictures of the cats using the toilet just don't look right though. I laugh when I think about doing it. It sure would be nice .

I have a cat who isn't at all good at covering up his stuff, either. Every other cat I've ever had (and I've had many) does it automatically, but this cat will try by scraping the floor OUTSIDE of the box. Doofus.

Do they teach them how to flush too? If not, wouldn't it still smell til you noticed it and flushed it?

I'm pretty sure that they can't flush.... But I think that it won't smell so bad once it's submerged in water... (Unless you let it sit for a long time, of course)
