A little career security

So DH and I are trying to decide if he should upgrade to Capt. DH would like to wait until Capt lines are available in our hometown. At the same time he would like to get his hours to finally make the move to the majors. In all honesty we have no idea what to do.

My push right now is for him to get the Capt hours. He'll be a commuter for about a year, and then he'll have his hours or be able to get back into COS. Neither of us wants to leave Colorado so moving is not an option at this point. My reasoning for the Capt jump is so that he'll insure his career. If anything was to happen to his company he would have more options than moving to the bottom of another regional. I feel so cruel asking him to leave to become a capt, but we agree this is reasonable considering his "risky" career choice.

What experience have others had with this decision?

my DH waited to upgrade until he could hold a line because he also commutes and commuting to sit reserve stinks. looking back, he wishes that he would have upgraded a tad bit sooner so he would have more hours than he does now. but those fo schedules were nice when he was at the top of the list thats for sure! i say upgrade ASAP so DH can get the hours as soon as possible and have the ability to at least be able to apply to the majors.
