Jo, I had the same issues w/ his job, but I had to force myself to deal with it. He spent four years of his life, gave up a very steady income, to live his dream. We started dating right before he got his first 121 job so I saw how much it meant to him and the sacrifice he made. Believe it or not, you get used to him being gone and really start to value your alone time. Sure I miss him and I get irritated w/ the situation, but what do I do. As long as he supports me I have to support him. I am worried about having kids, but my dad was a traveling salesman(gone 2 wks a month) and it was the quality of time we had not the quantity. It will be hard and I will have to make compromises, but the alternative is not being w/ him and that would stink! Hang in there, it will get better just keep yourself as busy as possible!

Yup--she's in Hong Kong! But her BF is not, sadly. We have to coordinate our chat so she can join in! I can't wait to hear about her adventures!

I was almost hoping that somehow she is the wife of my ex-boyfriend! We have kept in contact for 20 years and he finally got married last year to a girl from Korea. He was furloughed from USAir and has been working for Korean Airlines under some sort of contract. He has a house in Park City (don't know if he sold it yet) and a condo in Hawaii. I'm not sure how their marriage has been going, but I should tell him about this sight! I was really hoping it was her cause I'd love to "meet" her! Darn!

Sorry to disappoint you..Roz is right - I'm in HKG and my BF lives 9,000 miles away. He flies internationally with QF so we only catch up when he is on layover somewhere in Asia.
Talk about tough!

Melissa, you are so right, sometimes when times get tough , it's so hard to rationalize with myself. Bill got home last night and it just feels so nice to have him here. I am learning to just really appreciate every single moment that we have together and know that it WILL get better. He was just telling me this morning that he wishes he were home longer this time. He leaves again tomorrow already.
Thanks again for all your advice, it really helps me realize that most of the time, it's NOT THAT BAD!

I don't get sad when Bill goes on trips. Half the time I'm glad to see him go.... Gives me the chance to do my own thing!

I'm the same way...but then again, out of all of us on this thread, you and I are the only ones with a small child at home. Ben keeps me very busy while Jason is gone and I can't get a THING done with him home...so I look forward to getting my chores done while he's gone!

That is SO true! Having him here sometimes seems like just another person to clean-up after/feed/take care of.

i think my main concern is how stable is it to raise children with a dad that is only around for a few days a week. I know it's do able but does this career make it more challenging? Do the kids start to resent the job? I overheard a senior capt. talking to his female FO last weekend in the airport about how bad it's getting for his family because he's gone so much,,,, i know every situation is different it just brings up a lot of concerns,,,, anyone care to comment? Jo,
Yes, it is a challenge to raise a familyl with a pilot parent, but it is doable. We have a good friend that is a senior tax accountant with Price, Waterhouse & Cooper. This time of year, he only gets to see his kids on Sunday. He works 6 days a week, leaves while they are eating breakfast (if they're even up yet) and comes home after they are in bed.

We feel that Jason definatly gets more time with Ben then some 9-5er's. Lately Ben has been going through a stage where he wants Mommy all of the time, even when Jason is home....Jason is afraid its because of his job, but I had to remind him that two weeks ago it was all about Daddy and Mommy who?? So, its just a phase kids go through.

Jason is without a doubt the more "fun" parent because when he is home he wants to spend all day playing with Ben and making him laugh. My favorite thing in the world is to just watch them from the kitchen....I love seeing my two guys so obviously happy to be in each other's company.

Every morning when I get Ben out of his crib, we have to open the front door to see if daddy's truck is in the driveway. If it is....he goes to the steps and says "Daddy" because he knows he's still sleeping. If the truck isn't there, he points up to the sky and yells "bye Daddy!" Right now its all Ben knows. We always joke that he is going to go to Kindergarten and say to his best friend "you mean your Daddy is home EVERY night???"

Children are very adaptable and resilient.....and having a pilot for a Dad boosts the cool factor for any little boy!

Sorry this ended up being so long.....
