Default Flying with DH, etc

Michelle's post elsewhere got me thinking....

Have you ever flown with your DH or whatever while he was the pilot? My situation is different than most in that I did not marry a pilot. Charlie became a pilot while we were married.

One time he decided we needed to visit his parents in Tampa. He borrowed a friend's Cessna 152 and we "flew". For most of the trip the cars on I 95 were going faster than we were. At about 3 AM we needed fuel and were nearing the Charleston airport. They didn't want to let us in. They demanded to know what type of aircraft and what our fuel status was. They had to let us in once they knew. It turns out they were in the middle of an Air Florida hijacking to Cuba scenario. The hijackers could not speak English. The airport folks could not speak Spanish. I ended up translating roughly for them--enough to get the situation settled. We all took off and lived happily ever after.

So we got to Florida and DH's dad invited him to golf. Now Charlie, hates golf because he finds it boring and unathletic. His father was a 2 handicap. So he was pleased at the thought and recongition as his son. It turns out that his dad had his foursome; he just wanted Charlie (who thinks the GAME is boring) to ride along and WATCH the boring GAME. So is that why he felt compelled to buy a second BMW motorcycle? He needs to ensure that his life will always have excitement????

I don't understand--help me please.

And then there's the time in which he let our six year old son fly the plane (I was in the back) from Chincoteague to Philly. And then there was the time in which the door flew open and I had to try to hold it close till we landed. And then there was the time that he couldn't figure out how to land in Canandensis PA so we could have dinner at the Inn. It was uphill on a mountain. He figured it out and we dined.

So, did you ever have wonderful flying experiences?

I've flown with doug a couple of times.. once he took me up in a 172 while we were living in orlando.. it was only an hour stint, but i'd never been up in a small cessna before and i did get to fly the plane for a good 10-15 minutes of which i was told "you should take lessons, you handle the schtick well" (hahaha)

then there were a few other times i've flown with doug on his trips.. typically, the flights go great and doug's landings are really smooth.. but there was one flight that during takeoff, we hit a massive wake and it literally felt like we were thrown from side to side, rocking back and forth.. that scared me enuff that i had trouble flying after that, but i've gotten over it now thank goodness....

but yeah, a few flights here and there and most of them, i'd say, were good experiences! I keep begging doug to take me up in the 172 again or in a twin or something so we can go flying over sedona or up to the canyon for a night.. but after 4 years of living here, he still has yet to get checked out.. so, oh well....

Michelle as in me? Or a different Michelle. I was just wondering what post got you thinking Couldn't have been one of mine lol

Any way, to answer your question, I was dh's first "passenger" after he got his PPL. We went for a flight over the corn mazes in a Katana. Kind of cool to see them from above, cause from the ground they are a little more boring. That is the only flight I have been on with him flying. We are going to Vegas (maybe) in October and I want him to fly us but he won't. He says he wants Caleb to be old enough to remember their first flight together, and I said but that won't be tell he's like 6 or 7 cause youngesters usually only remember things that are traumatizing, and he said, (in his best mischeivious daddy voice) "So I'll traumatize him!" I will keep working on him cause I'd really rather he fly us.

Bill and I never got to fly together at Eagle, where we met. When he'd been at TWA a few months I bought an ID-90 on his flight from STL to LNK (Lincoln, Nebraska). I didn't give him any advance notice, and as I was checking in at the gate in STL he came walking around the corner to the gate and he saw me, stopped, and the look on his face was worth every penney that ID-90 cost! It was great, he was so suprised to see me. We had a great time, I was the only person in First. It was his landing, and to this day he still says that was the best landing he's ever had, ever. I've been on his flights a few times at Delta, and he went with me a few times on AA.

He was [i:e9baa7129e]my[/i:e9baa7129e] first passenger after I got my PPL. That was fun, he hadn't flown a small plane in many years and I let him fly for a while.

Jim took me up in a Cessna once - said he'd give me flying lessons if I wanted. I don't really want to be a pilot, but it was nice of him to offer.

One time when we were flying a trip together there was terrible weather as we were making our approach into DFW. Jim sat us (F/As) down early because of the weather. Well, I grabbed a small jar of peanut butter and spoon out of my bag on my way to my jumpseat. (It was late night and I was [i:3688be2451]starving[/i:3688be2451].)

So, I was sitting on the aft jumpseat munching on peanut butter and it's hard to describe how bad the turbulence was that we went through. From where I was sitting I watched people's heads suddenly go up then slam down, snap to the left and then snap back to the right - all in unison... up, down, side to side like a rollercoaster. It looked like it was choreographed. The only thing keeping these people from flying through the cabin were the seatbelts. People were holding hands across the aisles and screaming every time the plane dropped.

We pulled out of the approach and Jim came on the PA to announce that we were being diverted to Austin. We stayed in the same weather all of the way to Austin. Just so you understand how bad the turbulence was, after we landed in Austin two passengers got off the airplane and refused to fly again that night.

After I walked to the front and was standing by the cockpit door, a passenger stuck her head in the cockpit and said to Jim "You don't know how scared we were back there." Jim turned around in his seat, gave her a smile and said "You don't know how scared *[i:3688be2451]we[/i:3688be2451]* were up *[i:3688be2451]here[/i:3688be2451]*". The lady first looked startled and then started laughing when she realized he was kidding. Jim has a way of putting people at ease.

We've flown together several times but that was definitely a memorable flight.

but none since we had the Twisters.

HE and his dad own a Cherokee Piper 180. About a month after we met, DH flew me to Hot Spings, AR for his compnay Chrismtas party! THAT was a story to tell my soroity sisters! Then, while we were still in college, we went to Branson, MO for dinner a few times, and a few other places as well. We often just went and got the plane and flew around for a few hours in the afternoons - it was FUN!

Then, when he got online, I went on a few overnight trips with him from Dallas. I remember one into Brownwood, TX where there was severe turbulance on the landing. We were littlerally 200 feet off the ground, and he hit a downburst! It was SO scarry! Justin asked if the pax were scared, and I said, YES! Then I asked if he was, and he said yes as well!

We haven't had time since the kids were born. We were going to try to take the kids up in the Cherokee last weekend, but ran out of time. Plus, his dad doesn't really want his grandbabies in the plane, so I don't know when that will happen! LOL!

But, I really like flying with DH - I feel safer when he is flying than when he is driving (and he's got race car driver training!)

I've flown with my boyfriend Zach several times (mostly in 152s and 172s), and I've really enjoyed it. Hmm, maybe someday when I have money I'll take some lessons.

One of our first dates was a "$100 breakfast" type of thing where we flew to an airport that had a restaurant, ate lots of greasy food, and then flew back. I actually almost flew with him once before we started dating, but he backed out of it because it was on the same day as a dance concert I was performing in, and he didn't want to be responsible for possibly making me miss the concert.

Oh ya, this summer we've flown from Sacramento to Oakland a couple of times to see A's games. That was so much fun, especially the night flying back to Sacramento after the game!

Do you believe I'm married to a pilot and the smallest aircraft I've ever been on is an RJ? I've NEVER flown on a prop in my life! I know how to evacuate one because Comair was still flying them when I went through FA training, but when I got out on line, they were no longer in my base!

DH keeps saying he wants to take me up in a small plane, but we haven't yet.

While I was an FA, DH and I had numerous trips together and after I got pg, we planned almost all of them to fly together. It really helped me get through the trips! One time I was talking with a passenger and she asked me what my husband did for a living. I pointed to the cockpit door and said "He's flying our plane right now." She got a real kick out of that!

DH was my Capt on my last flight ever as an FA and he and the FO (who was dating a friend of mine) made an announcement that it was my last flight and that I was leaving this glamorous life to become a full time mommy. The flight was from Columbus to Cincinnatie and it was the end of a four day trip and I was 7 months pg, so as you can imagine, I WAS NOT in the mood to work, but after their announcement all of the passengers congratulated me and gave me a huge round of applause. In my hormone induced state, I started bawling right there in the galley!!

I've flown with Nick 6-7 times when he was instructor (Cessnas/Seminoles). My first flight with him we weren't dating yet and he took me from PHX to Sedona, AZ. I had no idea how much that cost him! He was trying to impress me and it worked! I also went up with him once when he was teaching a student (a friend of ours)- he did a bunch of lazy 8s which would have made me sick but I took half a Dramamine so no probs! Another time I went up with Nick and his old roommate and the weather turned bad and there was ice building up on the wings... it got me a little nervous! I haven't been with him since he got his job at the regional. I would love to be on once of his flights! Maybe someday.

I've flown with DH once, but before he got his PPL. It was a lesson that I back-seated on. That was kinda cool, to see how he was as a student.

He just got his PPL and a check out, so I'm sure I'll go flying soon. He took his friend Jeremy flying this week up to Napa. He can rent planes from his school for recreation flying on the weekends, but he needs 75 PIC before he can take passengers. :?
