Thanks for the info gals!
Christine- if you want to meet up while we're there, let me know! (not sure what our game plan is yet though)

This may be a dumb question, how long does it take to get from Oakland to San Francisco?

I'd say 20 minutes on the train, or whatever they call their transportation.

SFO has a BART station at it now. So that's actually easier.

OAK needs a bus to get to BART.

Once you get on BART and OAK, it takes I think 15-18 minutes to get to the first stop in San Fran. But getting on the bus and to the BART station takes a little longer.

And FYI ---> BART is expensive! It's an average of $3/ride; but they charge per station, not per ride, so the furhter you go the more it is. There aren't any all-day passes like with NY metro, and there aren't any discounts.

BUT ... if you stay in SF, you can get 1, 3, and 7 day muni (the SF bus system) passes for pretty reasonable. And the public transportation in SF is really good. It'll get you everywhere at all hours of the day.

geez, I thought mass transit was supposed to make it cheaper to get around! I guess they don't want anyone riding their system eh?!

it is cheaper - ever buy gas up here lately? Or try parking somewhere? Or cross the bridge every day?

It's more expensive than other transit systems ... but comparable for the bay area prices in other things.

biochemtine knows better than me about all that SanFran stuff. All I know is that I had a blast of a time while I was there.

Thanks for all of the great info! We can't wait to go to SF. We're kind of a "wing-it" type of couple... but I do want to get an idea of where to go, public transportation vs. renting a car, etc. You answered a lot of my questions. If you have anything else to add, please do!

Uh, no idea! My parents were in SF last year and stayed at Milano Hotel (55 Fifth Street). Nick and I are supposed to figure that out this weekend, although he'll only be here for a day and a half-- I hope we (well, he) make the time to talk about the trip. I don't know if I'm paying for my flight or risking using the Mesa BP!

I have a AAA Tour book that includes hotel listings. Nick may get hotel discounts too. I'll report back and let you know.

I know we're going to have a great time in SF no matter what!
