Default Long Island

We would like to go for a couple of days to Long Island. Are any of you from the area? What are some things that you recommend doing? Which are the best beaches? thank you!

My DH is orig. from Long Island. He moved away in '95, and was a teen when he moved, so he might not remember a whole ton....but he says there isn't much to see in Long Island other than the beaches. The Hampton's are nice. Pretty area's to walk around and the beaches are nice too. I asked if he remembers anything else, and he said he doesn't. Sorry, he's not much help. So, take my comment about how there isn't much to do in Long Island with a grain of salt.

But, the food there is awesome!! Just like in NYC, you can't beat the food on Long Island. YUMMY!!!!

I don't know much about the beaches and all, but Doug stays in Rockville Centre pretty often. We like going down to Croxley's Ale for a beverage and there are a few other good restaurants right in that area like the Thai restaurant and Grillfire. other than that, we really haven't seen much of Long Island except by air

Im from Long Island and love it! Where are you satying? This time of year its all about the East End. My fav beaches include West Hampton beach, Smiths Point, and Robert Moses. Jones Beach is fun too. The city of Long Beach has a great boardwalk and the east end has so many restaurants, bars and cute beach bungalows. Huntington has many places to go at night.

Another beautiful village is Port Jefferson. If you decide to stay in the Hamptons you should definitely check out the town of East Hampton.

There is a ferry service from Sayville, Patchogue and Bayshore to Fire Island. Fire Island is the barrier island that protects LI. If you leave from Sayville you could go to the Sunken Forest (its an actual forest at the beach!) and then hang out at the beach! You can also catch a water taxi to Ocean beach!

I could go on and on, so if you want to know any more specifics let me know!

Oh and you should try and fly into Islip MacAurther airport in Islip. There are almost never delays

What part of Long Island are you from?? My DH grew up in Smithtown and has family in Huntington, Huntington Station and E. Northport.

I forgot about Port Jefferson. I've been up there once with DH's family and its pretty there.

Originally im from Lindenhurst, but I moved to Sayville when I was 13. One of my good friends lives in Northport I love Huntington as well. I always go to the mall thats in Smithtown (its one of the nicer ones). Smithtown is about 15-20 min north of Sayville. Yeah, Port Jeff is really nice. I used to work at a bank there and went to school at Stony Brook University (which is in Stony Brook the next town over). I miss it a lot. When did your husband move from there?

Gotta love the Rockville Center Inn aka Sunrise!
Last time I went to a beach on LI, I had to dodge the floating plastic tampon tubes and hypos. Not a pleasant thought but it was not anywhere near FI nor the Hamptons.

LI has so many things to do. Its in a very central location- you can go to the city, the mountains, the beach or the casino all within an hour or so. Mrs767er- RVC and western nassau is definitely so much more like the city every year. I agree that the water is not very beautiful. Its been awhile since i've gone swimming up there, but usually the water is just a darker color. After living in FLL and vacationing in the carribean I don't think I will ever enjoy swimming north of myrtle beach ever again! lol
