Default Australian Honeymoon

Hi guys,

My fiance and I are planning a two week honeymoon in Australia this September. Have any of you been there? Any advice on "must see" spots? We're both into scuba diving, so we'll definitely want to head to the Great Barrier, but what about other things? I don't know how much "city" stuff we'd like to do... I'd rather see things that can't be seen here in the US- awesome scenery, mountains, diving, hiking, etc...
Well... Maybe I should have left that part out. I do want to experience anything neat and new, so any advice you guys have would be awesome.

Thanks!

I haven't been, although my sister has many times. However, we have a new member who just joined yesterday and introduced herself who lives in Australia. I'm sure she can help you lots!

I can't wait to see your photos!

Here's the beginning of her post:

Hi Everyone!

Name: Louise (OzAviationChick)
Occupation: I'm in IT/Computers in Australia

Oh fantastic! Thanks so much, Roz! I will have to look her up... but I'll have to do it in just a bit. I've been procrastinating painting our guest bedroom for the last 2 hours. I'm going to be in trouble if I don't go get it done! Well, not really... but I will feel guilty.

I promise to get lots of good pictures on the trip. When I come back online later I'll have to try and get some photos posted on the site.
Thanks again for the suggestion.

Don't even think of missing Uluru (Ayers Rock as it used to be known)! Expensive to get there but not to be missed! I actually love the cities - Sydney (do the Harbour Bridge climb right up the outside of the bridge) is wonderful and Melbourne is nice too, albeit rather more 'normal'. If you go to Melbourne, hire a car and drive along the Great Ocean Road (basically goes along the bottom of the country) it has the greatest scenery. I took a trip in a little plane up over the 12 Apostles, which might be a bit coals to Newcastle if your husband to be is a pilot as I guess he is, but was well worth it. Up in the North - the area round Katherine and Darwin (Northern Territory) is meant to be wonderful - Crocodile Dundee territory!
If I were you, I'd read Bill Bryson's 'Down Under', or whatever it's called in the US. It's a great book with a lot of interesting info and something is bound to spark your imagination!
Have fun, although it will be hard not to!
Katherine

I know a guy (dude's as old as my dad) who went there and actually hiked on the Uluru. i just kinda sat there stunned as he was telling me his story of an all day hike (going around the signs and all) because from what i understand is that the Aboriginies see it as sacred land...it's unbelievable just how immature and rude Americans can be with someone else's culture, history and beliefs!

Oh that makes me cringe, and I'm not even American! Nope, just sit back, glass in hand and admire it from afar as the sun rises (or sets) and it turns every colour of the rainbow - you get a far better perspective from further away anyway! But no, no climbing, no, not ever! (And the same goes for the Great Pyramid in Cairo!)

Well... we're supposed to leave for the honeymoon in just a couple weeks (or so), and we still don't really have anything planned. I know I REEEEALLY want to go to the Great Barrier Reef area (Cairns), but as I've been researching it online, I can't seem to find any good deals! We're going to be non-reving into Sydney, and then we'll have to ID-90 it up to the Queensland area. I have no idea how that will work. Anyone have any good websites to find some tour or diving deals? While getting there will be pretty cheap, it seems our deals end there...

Yikes!

If you're looking for diving deals, have you gone on those websites? I'll have to ask DH (he's a diving instructor on the side)--but he's not home till Saturday.

I know a lot of people who echoed your sentiment about where you are going. They could get there cheaply but could not afford to stay there.
