If it's prime season (coming into the summer months which is our winter time), then you might not be able to get better deals than what's showing.

Like Alaska, some places are just expensive all year long.

The Reef will be expensive all year round - it's not seasonal (I don't think the prices tend to differ at all) so if you want to do it, you're going to have to bite the bullet I reckon.
Fortunately living expenses in Oz are not too bad (food, the all important beer etc) but anywhere you want to go, chances are a lot of other people will want to go to as well!
