I've been thinking about this one for a while. I have been teaching five years. For the first four, I was at a school in a low income area. The gifts I got were minimal. But I really appreciated the cards students wrote themselves. One year, one of my students grandmothers knitted a scarf and hat for me. It brought tears to my eyes that they went to this effort for a gift, probably because they could not afford to buy something. I am at a new school this year which is in a more affluent area, but still work with many students from lower incomes and I am not sure what I will get. The bottom line is, any thought or effort you put into the gift will be appreciated by the teacher.

When I was in 2nd grade my mom and I didn't have much money, so I made my teacher a ornament. She was my favorite teacher and I put alot of effort into it. She gushed over it, said how much she loved it, etc. It really meant alot to me that she was so excited. The next year (I was in 3rd grade), I saw her in the hallway around Christmas time and she told me that she still had the ornament I made for her and it was prominently placed on her tree. I was so excited! I felt so good about my gift. It was nice to know that even though I wasn't in her class anymore, she still thought about me occasionally.

Thanks everyone. I always make a ton of cookies for neighbors, family and stuff, so I guess I'll give Billy's teacher a tin of them and a gift card to either Starbucks or Panera. I don't know what else I would give a man teacher anyway! I know he has kids, so if he doesn't eat cookies, I'm sure his kids will!
