Hi, my name is Laura and I'm new to the board. I have been reading the old and new postings for several months now and I've finally opened my own account. A little bit about myself...I'm a 21 year-old psychology student in MI; my boyfriend is 23 and just recently finished flight school in FL and is moving to PA to flight instruct. I will be moving to PA in May after I graduate. We've been together for about 1.5 years now...so I guess we're already used to this whole long distance thing. My BF was actually the person who found this website for me when I was having trouble dealing with his whole career. Kristie, the post under "making of a pilot family-why it's worth the effort" described every feeling and thought I had been having...knowing that there are other people out there who have made it through all of these struggles gave me the hope and strength I was looking for.
Anyways, I will post as much as I can...I don't know anything much at all about the industry, so I hope to learn as much as I can!
Thanks for listening!

Hi Laura!
My name is Amanda. You can read more about the members in the thread above this one entitled "Get to Know Ya". My boyfriend and I are both from PA. Where in PA is you boyfriend moving? My boyfriend tried to start his aviation career in PA but the weather wasn't very helpful so he moved here to AZ. He was an instructor when I met him in 2002 and now he workws for Mesa, a regional based in PHX.
Welcome!

Hi Laura!

I'm Christine. My husband is a ground school instructor 100 miles away, so we're starting to live the airline lifestyle already. It sucks usually, but this board helps and having friends/family who support our decisions helps too.

Welcome to PF.

Hey Laura - welcome!

I'm out here in Hong Kong (although I'm from the UK) whilst my BF is in Australia, so we too are doing the long distance thing. I met him when he had a stop here en route to London just over a year ago. He flies 747s for Qantas.

..it really does help if you know about the industry (and not just how the life of a pilot is)..I have worked in aviation for around 5 years now so am very familiar with things - if you haven't already signed onto any aviation news magazine websites (like Flight International or Airline Business) you might want to - IMHO it does really help to have a feel for things.

But when it comes to issues of actually being with your pilot, there really isn't any better than here...you can vent away knowing you are understood and ask questions knowing that more than likely, someone here has gone through the same.

Do stick around.

Welcome Laura!!

Good to see the articles are actually of help! sometimes it can be really hard to find people that relate, but when you do, it's like letting the air out of your shoulders cuz you know that now you have a place to go and ask questions to help learn and appreciate what's going on around you. If you have anything at all, whether it's a question or just a vent - please feel free to just use the site as your window to "get it out" so you can bypass each hurdle as it comes along.

back when i was a newbie, the challenge was in home life and not so much industry life.. now a days it seems the challenge is in both since pilots aren't able to upgrade quickly like they did in the past. it's a different industry and it can make it more difficult to cope. I'm hoping that someday, we'll go back to the days of easy upgrade, quick moveups and happy pilots!! until then, you'll have a lot of learning to do - not only with yourself and family life but with your man and the industry!

So where in michigan are you?

Hi Laura! Welcome!

I've been at this game for a long time. It's a real balance and no one else in the world understands that you can't just buy tickets for a show six months in advance! It's all possible with flexibility and acceptance of the fact that the water heater only dies on the day they've left for a six day trip! We've managed to raise a son and I've always worked full time during this process. Kristie's right in that upgrades are really slowing down for certain airlines as hiring slows. The industry is very uncertain today. Yikes, I heard on Face the Nation that oil is expected to be over $100/barrel this year and that we will be looking back fondly at $3.00/gallon gasoline. That will certainly hurt the industry!

I'm in Philly and DH is based out of DTW. Where are you and where is your BF going in PA?

Hi Laura - welcome! My name is Anjani, and I've been with my boyfriend (Zach) for 3+ years now. When we first started dating we were both college students majoring in geology. We've gone through some changes since then, and now I'm living in Tucson (as of last week) and he's finishing up his training at American Eagle. He'll be based in Puerto Rico. Long distance relationships aren't necessarily easy, but they are worth it as I'm sure you know. This site is certainly a great support.

Good luck with your last semester of college!

Welcome!

My name is Robyn and I am an 8th grade science teacher in NH. My husband, Brendan, is a CA for ExpressJet (aka Continental Express) based in Cleveldand. He has been flying for them since June of 99. Prior to that he flight instructed at our college, Florida Tech. He was lucky to only have to instruct for about 6 months after graduation (he instruted while in school too).

This board is great for support. There will be many times you will question why you want to be involved with someone who will be gone a lot, but you can't help who you fall in love with. It is a lifestyle that sucks sometimes (I won't lie), but you will learn to deal with it. I can't imagine my life without Brendan even though I miss him a lot when he is gone.

Good luck finishing school and welcome to our "family"
