Hello, lovers of pilots! I am not really named Carmen, I just thought it was cute considering I am always wondering, "Where in the world is..." so-and-so today. My name is really Pam. I have been in love with a pilot for the last 18 months and it has been fabulous, interesting and unconventional. Now that we're settling into "real" life...so many questions arise that this seemed a good way to connect with others who've been there, done that. My boyfriend flies the Airbus for United. He used to fly the 777 but was bumped down in last year's rounds of cuts. He's in that weird seniority where he's safe but has to change all the time. He's more senior on the Airbus so he's safe for a bit. He has 12 years with them and flew Navy for the 10 years before that. I am a banking consultant and own my own business and I also travel extensively for my own work. And, when my flyboy isn't flying, he coaches developing Olympic athletes...so he's not even always home when he's not flying! Us trying to coordinate schedules is VERY tough, because I can't guarantee I can always be home when he can. Sometimes we meet in cities other than home. (We're not married yet, so no unlimited freebies for me...but regardless, we think it's worth spending the money to see each other when it's possible to do so.) I can see why a more traditional family dynamic could be very helpful in an aviation family. But we are both in our mid-40s, both previously divorced, so we get it and are fine with staying connected in other ways via email, text, online chatting and so forth. I agree that it keeps the relationship fresh and vital when you get the time apart. I have learned that TOGETHER is in your heart...the physical distance between you makes it more important to keep the emotional closeness as strong as possible. Even after 18 months...I still call him and leave him a voicemail on every flight...and he does the same for me...it's our little tradition. (I gotta be on my toes when he does four domestic up-and-downs in one day!) That way, when either of us land somewhere, we have a cheerful surprise awaiting us. And I also still make him a "Welcome Home" sign every time he comes back from work. I look forward to meeting you all and learning from and sharing with you! Pam |

Haha, Pam the message and sign thing is adorable! It's good to have you on the boards! I'm Maria, living in the LA area (south) and working the aviation field.. of course, also dating a pilot. I'm also new, so feel free to send a message anytime. Looking forward to seeing you around more! |

Hi and welcome to the board! ![]() I used to make Nick welcome home signs and add little love notes to his luggage, but after a while I just couldn't keep up! I'll have to do something again since all we have been doing recently is stuff for our new baby!

Hiya Pam! Good to have you here. My name is Kate. I'm still in school so my fiance and I do the long-distance thing for the summers. It was a lot easier before he got furloughed and could fly down anytime! But I look forward to the days that we can meet in cities too. Do you have any favorites?
