Default New Year's Day

Ladies,

Am I the only one who's heard of eating black eyed peas for good luck on New Year's Day? Greens for money, and ham for health? Is this just a southern tradition? I'm finding that everyone I fly with looks at me like I have 3 heads and asks, "what do black eyed peas have to do with New Year's?"

That said, any recipe ideas that will get my BF to actually eat black eyed peas and collard greens so I won't worry about his lack of good luck in the coming year?

Thanks!
Delia

I've had vegetable beef soup w/ black eyed peas in it ... you can go for that! OR .... have ham and bean soup and in lieu of the beans, use black eyed peas! That will take care of 2 traditions. Not sure about collard greens.

My MIL says all you need are collard greens, some salt (or salt pork, but not much cuz it's sooooo darn salty) and chicken broth...boil the collard greens and poof, done. she didn't specify a time or anything, i think just up until boiling.

she also mentioned that fresh would be better than frozen.

My mom makes all the traditional foods every year. I stay away from collard greens. NOT my favorite so I can't help you the preparation. I honestly don't know if it's a southern tradition or not. I think maybe it is. I should know, I guess, since I was born and raised in the South. LOL...just never paid much attn. to the southern kitchen!

Happy New Year!!!

Thank you all for the ideas! I'm not much of a fan of the greens, I only eat them once a year out of principle and superstition. So I just bought a can and plan to heat them up long enough to get a few bites in. Perhaps that explains why I'm so bad with money? lol

I hope you all enjoy a bit of relaxation today. I plan to be lazy, too. May not even get out of my pj's! Happy New Year to you all, and may the worst day of 2008 be better than the best day of 2007!

I was always told every black eyed pea you eat on New Year's Day is a dollar you will recieve in the new year.

As for the collard greens, I don't know what the tradition is about. IMO, YUCK.
