| I liked Kristie's Recipe Club idea. So...I thought I'd post a recipe. I'm actually making this soup right now, so I thought while I had the recipe out...why not? Like Roz mentioned in another post...I don't usually cook from recipes, but when I find something I like, I write down what I did so I can make it again.....I actually got this recipe, though from DH's Grandma. Enjoy! BTW...I don't measure anything, so most measurements are approx. Spicy Bean Soup: 1 bag dried beans (I use the 15 bean mix) 2 1/2 quarts water 2 smoked ham hocks 1 cup chopped onion 15 oz tomato sauce (diced tomatoes work also) 1 - 3 Tblsp. Chili Powder (depending on how spicy you like) Wash and soak beans 8 hours or overnight. Rinse and drain beans. Place beans in large stock pot and cover with water. Add ham hocks and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 3 hours. Remove ham hocks to plate to cool. Add onion, tomato sauce and chili powder. Remove meat from ham hocks and add to soup. Allow to simmer 2 - 3 more hours. Its good the first night if its allowed to simmer all day...but its better if its been in the fridge or freezer and reheated. I usually serve it with cornbread and a salad. Its GREAT on cold winter nights! Enjoy!!! |

| [ QUOTE ] so.. uhh... what are ham hocks and where would I normally find them? [/ QUOTE ] Kristie, From foodnetwork.com... "Ham Hock Definition: The hock is the lower portion of a hog's hind leg, made up of meat, fat, bone, gristle and connective tissue. In the market, ham hocks are often cut into 2- to 3-inch lengths. Most have been cured, smoked or both, but fresh hocks can sometimes also be found. Ham hocks are generally used to flavor dishes such as soups, beans and stews that require lengthy, slow cooking. See also ham." Try your grocery store. ![]() Lots of ham hock recipes here: Click Here Dianne P.S. I really like the photo you're using in your signature. |

| You can find ham hocks in the grocery store where near the ham or ask the butcher. The recipe really calls for plain ham hocks, but my grocer only carries smoked, so I changed my recipe! :-D |

I was just joking because the last 2 messages showed me as "Guest". That was nice of you to offer though. Thanks. Dianne |
