Default We are both employed!!!

The best thing right now is I can say I am done with interview hell. I was offered a job today in the Marquardt School District. (It is in Glendale Heights...includes part of Addison and Glenbrook.) I will be teaching 7th graders this year. The school works on a loop, so next year I will have the same students as 8th graders. I have a language arts block, and social studies.
It is about 20 miles from where dh works, so we are going to start looking for some place to move to.
And tonight I just got a call offering me another job I had interviewed for. I told them sorry, I already accepted a job. They said they were going to make a decision by the end of the week last week, so when I didn't hear from them I figured I hadn't gotten it.

Congrats! I had a feeling it would work out--I know here they are ALWAYS hiring teachers, but sometimes it gets down to the wire before you get hired.

When do you start? I am a teacher also and our students started today. I am at a new school and it went pretty well....

New teacher orientation started while I was in my interview. I will go and sign my contract tomorrow, so I don't know if I will join in tomorrow after that, or just go to Thursday. Monday is institute day and students start wednesday.

geez, you have absolutely no time to study up on those two subjects - or have you taught them in the past to 7th graders?

dh has a question for you, since you'll be teaching social studies.. are you actually limited by what you teach/how you teach it and told to teach the students certain items while leaving other certain historics out of it? the reason he asks is because he's been doing all of this historical reading (both WWI, WWII and American History) and noticing a lot of the kids coming out of school aren't aware of that knowledge or maybe they just don't retain it?

Congratulations on the new job!! so, were you waiting more for the 2nd job or the one you took the offer from? I figured you'd get picked up here pretty soon... they can't even find enough teachers out here so i couldn't imagine you NOT being selected for something!

For social studies I will be given an assigned text book, which like any other textbook will leave some things out. As long as I use verified sources I can bring in other information. IE I can't go to Joe-Bobs World history site and print information for the class, but I am allowed to bring in articles, passages, etc.
As for the job, I actually wanted the first offer more. The second one was about an hour from where dh works, whereas this first one is only about 20 miles. I have not taught social studies to my own class before, but did teach it during a few internships in college. I student taught science and language arts.

I don't teach social studies, but I know in my district, they have specific content that has to be taught in specific time frames--takes a lot of the creativity away. But, they usually do cover topics more than once. By this I mean, they will get a broad view of a topic in middle school social studies, then in high school it becomes more specific. Students have to take "Survey of Social Studies," World Civilizations and U.S. History to graduate. I think a big part of the problem is that students do not retain the info more often than those on the outside would realize.
