Default D--- clogged kitchen sink!

The kitchen sink is clogged. I was peeling carrots and putting the peels down the garbage disposer and water wouldn't go down. Luckily hubby was home. He did the plunger, drano, and ended up taking the whole assembly apart. It is not in the pipes under the sink, but somewhere in the pipe out of the house. Hubby also wondered about the vent pipe (we have tons of leaves falling right now.) After two hours, one kitchen rug, and lots of cussing the sink is still clogged. Hubby is going to call a plumber tomorrow. D---, an expense and hassle we don't need.

Just venting, unless someone is a plumber and is near by there is not much that we haven't already tried. Thanks for listening.

That happened to me on Chistmas eve last year. Put potato peels down the disposal, and it clogged up. Husband and father took off the curved piece of pipe under the sink, they were past that. We had a plumber come the day after Christmas and he had to cut the pipe in our basement and snake it out. He thought he might have to dig up the basement floor, so we got off easy. He said never, ever put potato peels down the disposal, pretty much never put anything down that is similar to that either, only hard things that can be ground up or stuff that will disolve???

Hope your plumbing bill isn't too expensive.

I'm glad you guys shared that, actually. I had no idea you weren't supposed to put those peelings down the garbage disposal. It makes total sense... but I never thought about it. I keep meaning to start a compost pile, maybe I'll do just that next time we have potatoes or carrots.

Another tip is pasta. Normally that is OK to put down the disposal as long as you run it right as you're dumping the pasta w/ water running. A few years ago I put pasta down the drain and forgot to run the disposal. I went to bed, went to work the next day, and that night, after work, I ran the sink and turned on the disposal ... and nothing but a LEAKY MESS underneath the sink and spewing pasta water coming up out of the sink drain!! EWWWW! The pasta just expanded and expanded in that 24 hour time frame and nothing got past it.

I heard too that if you have a septic system instead of city sewer you weren't supposed to use the disposal as much either. Which makes me wonder why we put one in our house?

so on that note...do you turn on the disposal with warm water running or cold?

just curious....wondering if one temperature of water helps stem smell vs another

did you have the option of city sewer? if you do... i'd switch over to that...septic will drive you nutz having to empty it out every so often (otherwise it overflows the yard..ick!)

if you don't have the option of city sewer connection, then wait till it's available and get all the neighbors together and create a "special district"...you'll have to pay for the connections yourselves but the special district will help the city with prioritizing and assisting in getting the $$ needed to dig up and install/connect.

Its random for me. If I've been washing dishes and the water has already warmed up, then the disposal is run w/ warm water. But if I'm just running the disposal for something quick, its cold water since the warm water hasn't made it to the tap yet. I don't wait around for the water to get warm first.

I wish we had the option of getting city sewer, but thats not the way it seems to work out here it seems that you can get city water...but no infrastructure for sewer..at least we have city water....
