I've been kind of quiet here lately because there's been a lot going on in our lives the past week. One of these things is that my husband finally got a new job! He'd been trying to get out of the airline for awhile now, but every job offer he got fell through for one reason or another. Just the other day, though, he got one that seems to be promising. It's a corporate gig, which is exactly what he's been looking for. He's been unhappy with the airlines ever since he started there and will be glad to get out and into something with a little more room for advancement for the time being. Neither of us could really see anything good coming of the Pinnacle-Mesaba-Colgan merger so since that was announced in July, he'd been trying to find a way out even faster than before!

There will be a lot of changes coming for us. Most will be good, but some I'm not so thrilled about. One being that he'll be away for training for two weeks next month and then another two weeks a few months afterward. He's never been away from home for more than 4 days at a time so I'm not looking forward to being alone with a baby (and pregnant again - yay, fatigue) for that long with no help. We're going to try to work something out with his family, but they haven't helped much before so I'm not expecting much this time around either. I'm definitely dreading this part of the job, but once that's over, it should (hopefully) be smooth sailing. He'll just be happy to finally have a few captain type ratings under his belt – something he wouldn't see at Mesaba for the better part of a decade since things have gotten so bad there the past year (and will probably just get worse once Pinnacle is in charge).

We're definitely excited about all the changes that are about to happen. He's flown corporate before, but I've never had any experience with any of it. I guess he'll know of about 95% of his trips a week or so in advance, but he will be on call, too. From what the company says, it seems like he'll have less days off than he would at the airline, but most of the trips they do are day trips so he'll be home more at night . That's one thing I'm definitely looking forward to!

I have to admit I'm going to miss the airline world, though. It's how we met and what I've been used to for so long. I'm going to miss having the ability to just hop on a plane and go wherever I want, but with Pinnacle's crappy travel benefits that we'll end up with next year, I probably wouldn't be doing much nonrevving anymore anyway.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ENTER INTO SLOT LEASE AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EWR)
DALLAS—Aug. 27, 2010—Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines confirmed today that they entered into a lease providing Southwest Airlines access to 36 Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) slots which are currently held by Continental.
The lease deal, contingent upon the closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger by Nov. 30, 2010, and certain governmental approvals, would give Southwest Airlines the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark, New Jersey, with some flights beginning in March 2011 and a full schedule in place by June 2011. The slots are spread throughout the day and would allow Southwest the ability to integrate Newark service conveniently into its extensive national route network.
“We are excited by the opportunity to initiate service from Newark, New Jersey, and we plan to enable that service starting next March through continued flight schedule optimization using our existing fleet,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “We’ve seen tremendous demand for Southwest Airlines in the New York City/Newark area in the past year. Customers are clamoring for our unique brand of hospitality, great value, low fares, extensive flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver outstanding Customer Service. Adding Newark provides an excellent complement to our LaGuardia and Long Island service, giving Customers one more option for travel to and from the greater New York City/New Jersey area. This service also will provide a needed injection of low fares and competition into the New York/Newark market.”
Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Continental and United Airlines to finalize arrangements for commencing its Newark service in March 2011, including the approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities. Details on what cities Southwest will serve from Newark and on what dates that service will begin have not yet been determined.
“The divestiture of slots at Newark by the combined Continental/United will ensure competition is enhanced, and we appreciate the Department of Justice’s role in finding a fair solution,” Jordan said.
After 39 years of service, Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and currently serves 69 cities in 35 states. Southwest also is one of the most honored airlines in the world, known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/cares to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has nearly 35,000 Employees systemwide. When shopping for Southwest online, it's important to know that Southwest Airlines’ low fares are only available at http://www.southwest.com/?src=PREMNASEWRANNOUNC100827.
This news release contains forward-looking statements related to Southwest’s lease of slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and its related plans and expectations. These statements are based on Southwest’s current intent, beliefs, and expectations and are not guarantees of future results. These statements also involve risks, uncertainties, assumptions, and other factors that could cause actual results to vary materially from those expressed in or indicated by them. Factors include, among others, (i) the timely closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger, (ii) receipt of necessary governmental approvals and the timing thereof, (iii) approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities and the timing thereof, and (iv) changes in consumer demand and preferences related to the Company’s service and changes in the Company’s overall business plan and strategies.###

Dh was/is positive spaced to IAH today to do paperwork, badge, redo background check since he'd been out for so long. They (the person he's supposed to meet with) told him he had the last seat on the 6:30...which is great! In order to get to the airport we have to leave the house at 4:00AM. Which is all well and fine until he gets to the airport and the flight is now oversold by 3 (this is why I never non-rev out of here) but since he's positive spaced it just means they have to get him there today, but if he doesn't make the next flight he would get to IAH to late in the day to do everything. I guess the gate agent asked him if he wanted to declare a "must ride" but he didn't want to because its not like he *had* to get to work. So the next flight is "at capacity" which means he probably won't get on that one either......

AGHH I'm so annoyed (this is also because I have been up since 3:30 I took dh to the airport) and when I drove home I was going to go to McDonalds BUT it wasn't open......:scream:

Welcome back I guess......right?:sarcasm:

We received some fantastic news today in regard to our Aviation Career Expo in October.

Doug was talking to the Colgan recruiters about coming to our October Aviation Career Expo in Las Vegas and yes, they are on board....

Anyhoo, they need 64 pilots in the next 2-3 months. Since we'll be having our expo in 3 months, we'll most likely be able to offer in person one-on-one interviews at the Expo.

If any of your guys have the mins needed, it might be just what you're looking for to move up!

Also....Colgan, Polar/Atlas and Delta are looking for inflight service (Flight Attendants) as well. They too will be interviewing for FA positions at our Aviation Career Expo.

So if you're interested or know someone that's interested in being an FA...make sure you spread the word that we will have companies there who are searching for FA candidates!

AND...Delta is looking for *diversity* in their job candidates...if you're a minority, you may be in luck interviewing at the Expo...heck, you might just walk out with the job!! they're having a fairly difficult time finding diverse candidates to hire. So, if you know of anyone that fits the bill (African American, Women, Indian, Hispanic or what have you) and has the requirements, please let them know that Delta wants them and that we will have Delta at the Expo.

I'm also working on getting TransPac Academy out to the Expo. They're a training academy and are in need of CFI's *really* bad....This may be a good location for those who don't have the hours to move up to be able to work on a deal to get their CFI and instruct as well as time build. I'll let you know when its official that they are on board. Kirstypie, this might be a workable situation for your hubby as they're the type of company that can work out a deal where your hubby would get the CFI training then be an instructor on a 2 year contract after his training is complete. I've heard of these types of situations happening before with others in the same type of situation.

so good news on many fronts today!

Hi Ladies!

My husband attended the Mesa Pilot Development program and finished a year ago. They "guaranteed" an interview, but it has not happened. Meanwhile, he's applied to all sorts of other places, but no one is willing to take him with the qualifications and hours that the got at Mesa (287 hours).

I was wondering if anyone else's hubby attended this program (or any other similar pilot mill) and if so, what steps they took to obtain a job after they graduated. We're already $100,000 in debt and still he is unqualified to be considered ANYWHERE - even cargo, banner towing, or skydiving operations.

At this point, his only option is to become a CFI, but we're tapped out. There's no money left for him to get that certification. Maybe in a year from now, but he'll probably be so rusty he'll have to spend thousands more just to get comfortable in the cockpit again. Argh, this is hard.

What did your husbands do to get the hours needed without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars?

The plane had just landed, but he was ready to take off.

A JetBlue flight attendant blew his top, grabbed a beer and bolted out an emergency slide at Kennedy Airport on Monday - then headed home to have sex with his boyfriend.

After he was bonked in the head by a bag, Steven Slater stunned passengers by spewing profanity and ranting about quitting as the flight from Pittsburgh pulled up to the gate around noon.

"To the f---ing a--hole who told me to f--- off, it's been a good 28 years," Slater, 38, purred, cops said.

"I've had it. That's it," he added, according to a passenger on board.

The mad-as-hell steward grabbed a couple of brewskis and popped one open before activating the emergency exit, witnesses told airport employees.

After tossing his two carry-on bags on the slide, he followed them to the tarmac.

Slater -- who actually starting working for airlines 20 years ago, not 28 -- then walked to the AirTrain, stripped off his company tie and flung it off as bemused passengers watched.

"I wish we could all quit our jobs like that," said passenger Phil Catelinet, 36, of Brooklyn, who was on the flight and the AirTrain.

"He seemed kind of happy about it. He was like, 'I just quit my job.'"

Port Authority police said it took JetBlue 25 minutes to report the incident, allowing Slater time to leave the scene.

Cops found him in bed with his boyfriend when they arrived to arrest him at a beachfront home in the Rockaways with a porch overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, sources said.

He boasted to skeptical cops that he really did escape by the chute with his carry-on luggage.

"Oh yes I did! I threw them down first and I went down after," he told cops, according to sources.

He was grinning as they walked him in handcuffs to a squad car. "He left with a big smile on his face," said neighbor Curt Karkowski.

He was wearing a sheepish smile when Port Authority detectives walked him to a waiting van a few hours later. He was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

JetBlue would not say how long Slater had worked for the airline, but he wrote on his MySpace page that he was "enjoying being back in the skies" after a five-year break.

I love to max it out with trips around the world, sometimes on a moment's notice!" he gushed.

Neighbors described Slater as a nice guy, but said he was under some stress. His father died recently and his mother has cancer.

His MySpace page, packed with photos of Slater posing in his JetBlue uniform, says he beat "alcoholism and substance abuse."

He apparently reached his breaking point on Flight 1052 when a passenger tried to retrieve a bag from the overhead compartment, and it clocked him on the head, cops said.

Words were exchanged and the passenger cursed at Slater, they said.

After the plane arrived at the gate, he took over the intercom and began spewing abuse.

"We just looked at each other and said, 'What the heck was that about?,'" said Catelinet. "I thought, 'Let me get off the plane before they stop us or something.'"

He said he was stunned when he ran into Slater on the AirTrain, bragging about his "take your plane and shove it" stunt.

"It's pretty much the craziest thing I've ever seen on a plane," Catelinet said.

The brother of Slater's partner said he was "dumbfounded" by the wacky incident.

"He's an every ordinary guy, a nice guy," said John Rochelle, 39, whose brother, Kenny, lives with Slater.

Neighbor Janet Bavasso, an ex-flight attendant, said she could sympathize with any airline worker losing their cool. But she couldn't imagine Slater going off.

"I just can't picture him running down the tarmac," Bavasso said.

A JetBlue coworker who was on the same flight called Slater a working class hero.

"It's something we all fantasize about," she said. "But we have kids and a mortgage or are just too chicken - or sane - to go through with (it)."
