Default plumbing...

anyone deal with plumbing issues like ever? i got a call from my maid service (one a month deal) and they said that the water in my shower wouldn't "shut off" and was dripping more than just a light drip.. so i left work way early cuz i don't need a big increase in a water bill...and i get home and the drip is no longer dripping...

I know i have to replace the shower handle (just one turn on/off for both hot and cold) but i have absolutely no idea what needs to be done first so i don't start a big leak and have to turn the water off to the house.

I still have to look at the big orange book (home depot book) but does anyone have any fix it tips?
