| I just thought I'd post because I'm so frustrated about something right now. Since Db got back from flight school in Arizona, we've been looking for an apartment so that we could move in together. I make a good salary, but he makes nearly nothing as a CFI... we figured we'd be able to afford SOMETHING. But after 3 months of looking, it seems like we are totally stuck! Right now, he lives about an hour and 40 minutes from work, and I live about an hour and 15 minutes away (my job is only about a mile from the airport, so essentially we work at the same place!). Since an hour and 40 minutes each way is a LONG commute, he's been staying at my house most of the time so that it's only an hour and 15 minute commute. Unfortunately, since we work different hours, most of the time we can't commute together. The problem about living at home is that we have no space (I have the smallest room in the house!) and my younger brother and sister are here, and we're both just going crazy. The thing is, we live in New Jersey... and if anybody knows anything about NJ, you know it's EXPENSIVE as anything to live here. All of the 1 bedroom apartments that we've looked at that are near work are between $1100 and $1300 a month, plus utilities - and there's no way we could afford that. Or, if we COULD afford it, we'd be living pay check to pay check, and we wouldn't be able to save any money at all. Has anybody else been in a similar predicament? We've tried finding roommates, but that never seems to work out, and we're both just so frustrated, not to mention totally drained from commuting 2 and a half+ hours per day. Any suggestions? I'm sorry for such a long post, but I'm just so angry at the situation because I feel like I make a good salary but it seems useless because nothing is affordable!! |

| Having lived in NJ for 3 years, I know how you feel! We moved to NJ from VA after my DH was hired with Continental and he was based in Newark. We wanted to live in Northern Jersey, and we looked and looked, but could not find anything affordable. Mind you, this is on two salaries with no kids yet. We settled on living in central Jersey, first renting a VERY small apt, and then buying a single family home. However, we decided to leave NJ after 3 years for many reasons, one of them being how expensive things were, especially taxes. We ended up moving back to the DC area, and DH commutes up to EWR. Do you have to be up in Northern Jersey, or can you be flexible as to where you live? I know a lot of pilots that fly out of EWR commute from PA-I am not sure what airport you two work at. Good luck, I know how frustrating it is!

| Jetgirls Plus Member ![]() | That's why we live in PA! NJ is just soooo expensive for everything! I know at some point we want to look at NJ as a possibility for buying a house but I don't know if that's going to happen. Nick might be communting from PA for a looong time! When we first met Nick was a CFI and made nothing. He lived shared a place wirh 2 other guys and then moved in with me and I paid most of the bills. Good luck!

| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | I know that you said that you looked into roommates, but have you gone to an actual roommate service? About three years ago I found my ex-roomie through easyroommate.com... we chatted online and found that we were a great match! I was sooo happy that I went that route. There are a variety of different listings on there... you might be able to just rent a basement apartment from someone, rented rooms, larger groups renting houses, etc. Craigslist is also a good option. Don't give up on the roommate search would be my advice... if you try renting a room/basement in someone's house, a lot of times the utilities will already be included. Good luck, I know how hard it is when you don't have much money!! Last edited by flyershoe; 07-30-2007 at 02:07 PM. Reason: my horrible spelling & typos |
