I'm fat... Actually, it's more than that. My Dr. was pissed and I thought he was going to admit me, but I talked him out of it.

I'm about 40 pounds over weight ( a size 12 ) and had a blood pressure reading of 165/130. I was fine, no headache, no chestpain. My Dr. was the one I thought was going to have a coronary.

The stress here has just been insane. It seems all my dh and I do anymore is argue. I'm on deadline with my publisher and had to ask for an extension. With the kids home, I just can't concentrate and write, and then there's the whole tension issues as well. How can I write romance when my own life is swimming in the damn crapper??

I REALLY don't want to take blood pressure medicine so I'm considering joining a healthclub to get the weight off and hopefully help with the stress. From what I hear beating the hell out of a punching bag can do wonders for anger... If they just didn't have such long memberships. Anybody know anything about National? Should I use a trainer or just go it alone? Any advise?

I can attest that taking a kickboxing class can be VERY cathartic. I would look around your area for one -maybe even at a Martial arts studio. Check to see if there is an Ultimate Body Shaping instructor near you. Its a three month exercise and eating challenge that is FANTASTIC. I found that by utilizing a class, you begin to feel committed to the others in your class including the instructor and that helps you go on those days you don't feel like it.

Good luck
Jackie

I'm a big fan of Curves if one is near you. I hate working out in a gym with a whole bunch of skinny people - makes me feel like crap and that I don't belong there. Curves is a really low key, laid back atmosphere that combines the cardio and strength training.

I give them a big thumbs up!

I was just going to suggest kickboxing! That'll get you going. How about walking?

Wanna talk about hubby? What's going on? We're here for you!

I've been going to a gym since January and it has been great for losing weight, toning, and stress relief. I have a trainer that I have been with the last few months and it makes a huge difference. First it makes it easier to make sure I actually go, she makes sure I am doing things the right way, I do something different every time, have learned tons about what type of exercises do for you, etc. On the days I go when I am not taking a class or doing training, I just do some of the stuff I learned, which there are some really crazy things! Most of the gyms around here have different membership options allowing for monthly or yearly. They all seem to offer trial memberships as well.

I hope you find something that works for you and your life gets better soon!

We have a curves here but it's very small and doesn't offer any classes. I have a treadmill, unfortunately, no motivation to do it here at home...LOL. I just need to get out of the house and I think the gym will be helpful for that.

I don't know what's going on with me and dh. We're just so damn different. We can't even agree on movies. It's getting ridiculous. He's cold, I'm sweating. I tell him to cover up with a blanket, he tells me I'm selfish. I want to go out, he's been out all week and wants to stay in. I wanted to go out and eat more on vacation, he insisted we get a kitchen so I could cook and we could save money.

We'd spent the whole afternoon on the beach. I was just as tired as everyone else. What happens? I start dinner and he goes out to the balcony to call his brother. It's all these little things that are just eating away at me and driving me to the point that all I can think is I want a damn drink... It's all stupid stuff, piddly things, but they're turning into so much more.

Part of my problem is confinement. I'm so far in the boonies, my closests friends are 3 hours away. I'm hoping a gym will help with some of that and relieve how tense I feel all the time and then maybe if I'm not so tense all these mountains will shrink back into molehills.

I like the gym but its hard to get motivated to go. The gym closest to us is still 45 min away, and the 8:00am classes don't seem to early if you live near it but out here well...I would suggest you find a close gym, otherwise you'll end up like me going only once a week!!

MT, if you're serious about getting your weight down and controlling your bp, I advise a serious work out routine guided by a trained professional. A trainer will keep you on track, build a regimen that will work w/ your personality, physical limitations, and physical successes. Plus, knowing you have to meet that person at the gym will force you to go -- can't cancel.

Sure, you'll pay some money for the gym membership and the trainer, but it sure beats being tied to prescription meds from here on out. You'll have peace of mind knowing you're taking proactive measures for your prolonged life. And ironically, you'll have MORE energy than you do now.

For a matter this serious ... you need to be serious in your actions. Don't piddle away this warning. Act now.

i second the curves idea. i just joined one in november. i love it. it's slightly brain-less. i get in and get out in a 1/2 hour (3 days per week). who can't find time for that. i really noticed big changes in the beginning. this summer i haven't found it as easy to get there with husband's schedule, the (young) kiddos being home and wanting to just be outside. but during the fall/winter/spring...it was awesome. plus many insurance companies are paying towards the membership...
good luck to you!
