Default Is a hybrid worth it?

On the front page of my local newspaper (yesterday) there is a huge article entitled Is a hybrid worth it? I am pasting the link below. But on the actual newspaper there is a chart with the following information that I didn't see in the online link that I thought was interesting.

Toyota Prius (hybrid) $24,550 vs Toyota Camry (gas) $19,142. Fuel savings $1,092 a year. 5 Years to break even.

Chevy Tahoe (hybrid) $47,268 vs Chevy Tahoe (gas) $37,912. Fuel savings $815 a year. 11.5 years to break even.

Honda Civic (hybrid) $22,745 vs Honda Civic (gas) $18,307. Fuel savings $597 a year. 7.4 years to break even.

Lexus LS 600 (hybrid) $102,305 vs Lexus LS 460 L (gas) $83,697. Fuel savings $195. 95.5 years to break even.

I thought it was pretty interesting reading.

Anybody own a hybrid? Give us the skinny on it.

Very interesting read. Thanks katbuad. Many of you already know my take on hybrid cars from a thread a while back.

Is it just me?

I find this interesting though ...

Another problem that would-be hybrid buyers encounter is availability. There is a waiting list for most hybrids, primarily because manufacturers can't or won't build them in sufficient numbers to meet demand.

One cause is the limited availability of the nickel-metal-hydride battery packs that power their electric motors; the other issue is that automakers generally make little or no profit on hybrids, so they don't want to sell them in great quantities. Nissan, for instance, sells its Altima hybrid, made in Smyrna, only in California and a handful of Northeastern states.
It sounds like folks will buy a hybrid no matter what the cost (w/n reason, of course). They want to be better stewards of the environment and will pay a premium to do so. If manufacturers are making little to no profit, I think they can easily adjust the price tag to increase the profit margin. People will still buy.

How did I miss that entire thread!?!?! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Spent several mins reading. No use rebuilding the same thread here again with this one. Just enjoy the additional article.

I remember reading an article from the Recorder about the production of the batteries from you Spotty4 as well. Really enjoyed that one. Passed it along to several of the folks that usually send me good reads first. Thanks for making me look so smart.

When I finally get the money, I'm going with the Toyota Prius. I've wanted one since I was fifteen and if when I do finally get it, I'll be like, 'Hoo-rah!'
