Default A few good movies...

Watched a few good movies tonight.

In preparation to use your "right to vote" this year... watch "Iron Jawed Angels". It's all about the women suffrage movement in the 1940's and how after all the years of women trying to get the right to vote, finally do by means that had to be taken in order to be "seen". it was really interesting...

Other movie was called "Black Book" about a jewish woman in the 1940's (WWII) who through survival methods, did whatever she could to survive the war (living in Holland). very intriguing and gripping movie since she had to pawn herself off to the nazi's and had to deal with a lot of crap from ALL sides due to her getting caught in other peoples scandals and spy techniques. REALLY good movie.

Anyone else seen any others? Any other period movies i should rent?

Iron Jawed Angels was outstanding. What had me the most distressed was how viciously angry the men got - just because women wanted to vote. What the hell were they so afraid of? Freaks.

The Painted Veil is another good one.

And hours upon hours of the show Entourage.

Still is, in many cases. And I get that, but what's the reason behind that need for control? If not having "control" of a woman could make men that barbaric, they must have really, really felt they needed that control to make them men. Which just makes them incredibly weak and insecure, so much so they would beat a woman down before she was able to think for herself.

I just think it's interesting, and for all the studies that are done on women and why they do the things they do, I can't remember too many studies exploring why men do some of the weird things they do. WHY they require that control, even now (otherwise, why so much rape and assault?).

Again - just interesting.

Ahhh Kristie, I think you're about 20 years off -wasn't the 19th amendment ratified in the 1920's or is the movie about difficulties in utilizing it?

I find it amazing to look at all the changes that have happened in the last 100-150 years in this country that we now take for granted. A hundred years really isn't that long and look at how far we've come. Granted there's lots left to do but still facinating!

maybe it was just the change, as I age I am suprised about how much anger and hostility comes from the fear of anything different.

If i remember correctly, the movie takes place when Wilson is in office and right before the amendment goes thru, the US goes to war (WWI). so, yea, it would have been in the 1920's then.

Actually, the 19th Amendment was ratified in August, 1920. Wilson was in office 1912-1920.

I find it interesting when I mention to staff that classified ads used to read "help wanted male" or "help wanted female". They are shocked!
