| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | ok so I'm not really into the kinds of books (the mom/daughter touchy-feely) you're into, but here are a few that I finished recently that might be interesting to you guys! Virgin: An Untouched History by Hanne Blank - it is a sociological look at virginity in our culture and how/why it has developed such a stigma/value. VERY interesting! Slave: My True Story by Mende Nazer- It is true story about a girl who was kidnapped by Arab raiders from her home in Africa and sold into domestic slavery in Sudan. In 1993! VERY interesting look at modern slavery The Tattoo Artist by Jill Ciment - fiction story about a woman who was marooned on an island in the South Pacific in the late 1930's. She was ultimately brought back to modern society in 1970(ish) having never knowning about ball point pens, a man landing on the moon, etc. Her whole body is tattooed in the traditional style of the island. I wish this book had been longer and had gone into more detail, but it was a very fast and easy read. Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer - This a non-fiction book looking at the history of the Mormon Church and the subsequent branch of FLDS in the context of a murder that happened in 1984 where 2 brothers killed their sister in law and niece acting on a revelation from God. Also the Harry Potter series if you haven't read them - fiction/fantasy - they live up to the hype The movies are ok, but the books are incredible. |

He was a Civil Rights leader in the sixties and this is his autobiography. I was honored to take his Civil Rights class in college when he was 86. He was blind and had lost a leg to diabetes but he was there every week to lecture on his life and the Movement. Its a fascinating read, sprinkled with lots of funny, real-life stories of the Civil Rights leaders. For example, how Dr Farmer (who was married to a frail, white woman with blond hair) admonished Malcolm X for taking his coffee with cream and sugar -"Malcom, I'm surprized at you, intergrating your coffee that way. Me, I like my coffee like I like my women -BLACK and Strong!". Of course, Malcolm X was a black seperatist until right before he was assasinated and Dr. Farmer obviously loved his pale, weak wife to pieces! Its a wonderful book and here's the Amazon link.... My Sister's Keeper: A Novel by Jodi Picoult --good book...of the several of hers i've read...i've liked this one the best. i wish i had more recommendations for you. i'm a 1/2 price bookstore girl. i go to their clearance section...and pick books based upon the cover. if i hate it, very little loss to me.

| Jetgirls Ol' School Member | I just finished the book "Suddenly" by Barbara Delinsky. It was amazing. It's about 3 pediatricians in a small town in Vermont. The 4th partner of their practice has just committed suicide and it's about the aftermath and their lives. It was a great read. I stayed up late last night reading it because I couldn't put it down! |
