Trista - Go to a really good endodontist who specializes in these things, not a regular dentist.

Mine wasn't any more uncomfortable than a regular cavity filling. I freaked out right before I went in there- I was terrified. However, they did a great job and I wasn't in pain after they did it.

BYW- All my life I used to only get the "gas" for fillings. I was scared of the needle I never had novacaine until 2006 with the stupid dentist in AZ.

Trista -

I haven't had a root canal, but I did get all four wisdom teeth pulled last year (at the same time).

I tell you this because I THINK it could be as bad as having a root canal, and because I want to stress oh-so-strongly that you get the funny gas when you go in for the initial procedure.

I cried when I was first told I'd have to have my wisdom teeth pulled, because it scared the crap out of me. I've never usually minded the dentist at all, but that particular procedure ... I don't know. Ugh. I knew one tooth was sort of embedded behind a corner of my jaw, which meant scraping or something else unpleasant and surgical. Also, I mean, they were IN there, you know? These teeth were solid! And my mouth was small - what if they had to break my jaw? (I've heard of dentists having to do that.)

When the day came to have it done, my whole body was tense, I was clutching the armrests, and then...ahhh. And then, they injected me with something really, really, good, and I said, "Ohhh...that's nice!"

Novocainecame next, and while friendly dentist man was yanking and ripping at my face with his pliers and hacksaw, I was trying to babble about something and I think I might have even tried to joke (no doubt while spitting blood).

but it was all good!

Get the drugs.

I can't believe some of you were AWAKE when you got your wisdom teeth out! I was 18 and put completely under for the procedure! Did they offer to put you under? I guess it depends on the wisdom teeth. I had 4 that were impacted so they used general anesthesia.

The root canal was for me (of course) different since I was awake for the root canal. They used novacaine and nothing else. I didn't feel a thing. They drilled the tooth, like a cavity. I always thought that root canals would be VERY traumatic and I was extremely nervous before the procedure. It turned out I worried for nothing.

Trista- I hope your procedure goes fine like mine did. I had it built up in my mind since I thought it would be very painful. Try your best to relax and you'll be fine!

thanks everyone... I was put to sleep when I had my wisdom teeth pulled also. The dentist that told me they needed to come out didn't use sedation, so he sent me to someone who did. I didnt' have to ask, he just flat out told me I wouldn't want to be awake because they were impacted.

Unfortunately, this dentist doesn't use sedation, only gas... I keep telling myself I'll be fine. I'm sure that will work up until I actually sit in the chair...

Have you ever had the gas?

It works. I'm tellin' you. And it's FUN. It is, to put it honestly, the best high ever.

I have to agree with Kristen 100% here. I only had the nitrous gas for the first 36 years of my life.

I remember while they were drilling my cavities I felt like I was flying....flying high and having a goooood time!
You can "kind of" feel what's going on, but you just don't give a damn!
