I think I just figured out exactly why dentists have the highest rate of suicides.

haha, sorry...

It's not suicides. It's actually their disgruntled and in pain patients who murder them and make it look like suicide.

It's scary, but I like the idea of bringing some music to listen to, that sounds pretty great to me! I've been quite fortunate with my dental history... I think it's the sealants... but my poor Hubby's in the middle of getting two crowns... He's got the temporary ones now, and even had to have a "root legthening" procedure... It didn't seem too pleasant, but I guess we should've known that it wasn't going to be good when they said, "The pronosis for the tooth is fair." Yikes! His gums were pretty sore for awhile, and they even had to put on a tiny little dental bandaid... He's getting used to it... even starting to like it... I got a little worried today when we left the dentist's office, and he informed me of that fact. (We went back because he had a high spot from a recent filling, and one of the temporary crowns fell out.) He said, "You know, I was really feeling so relaxed there... with the little drill sounds and the water... I think I am liking it." Okay, so, he may be a little crazy...

Anyhow, GOOD LUCK with your root canal... It doesn't sound like fun, but you can do it! Usually things are worse in your head than they are in actuality, anyhow. Just try to be relaxed and get it over with...

I feel like dentists are always the bearer of bad news. The last time I went in I was told "So we've discussed getting your wisdom teeth out this summer..." Uhm, discussed with who, because it certainly wasn't me.

Sorry for your experience. I sympathize for you! Like many of these ladies that have responded so far, I too am terrified of the dentist, I just get really nervous and panicky like I may pass out..I guess its the anticipation of the possibilty of pain.

That root canal cost is staggering!

I am overdue to go for that 6 month check up. My husband has a dentist of which I will go to now to down here. I was going to the same dentist in Pa. for 21 years! He was a family friend. Even though it was never a fun experience, I felt I " knew " him and I could level with him to some extent!
I am concerned that with this new dentist he is going to go crazy with a bunch of fillings or whatever on me!

Good luck! Some of the relaxation suggestions mentioned sound helpful.

Every dentist I have gone too always question where my wisdom teeth are???? It's like they are looking for *something* to do...luckily, I got them out at 18...but freak show, I woke up mid-surgery and could, oh hear the grinding and feel the pressure, it was horrific, afterwards I had a panic attack and they almost wouldn't let me go home...it was bad...

I totally agree with the music...to me, that is one of the most relaxing forms...before I have also done breathing exercises prior to getting 'strapped' into the chair, oh and nice smelly lotion...if I can smell something other than 'dentist office' I find it more relaxing...

GOOD LUCK!

That sounds AWFUL!!!!!! That's why I have all of mine and I'm not getting them pulled! I am way too chicken! (Anyhow, it's never been recommended that I do it... What can I say? I have a BIG mouth! )

Kristie- FYI root canals aren't caused by just taking care of your teeth! My uncle was my dentist since I was a toddler and I have gone every 6 months since that time.

My root canal was caused by a crappy dentist who talked me into getting my old fillings replaced. She did not do a good job and left an abscess, which in turn got infected. THIS is what caused my root canal!

Sorry, just trying to educate!

Yup...I have gone to the dentist religiously every 6 months and would always get the 'works'...cleaning, flouride, sealant...but I have a 'diagnosis' of having 'soft teeth', meaning that I am just genetically prone to cavitites, something to do with my salivia, and really no matter what, I brush 2xday, floss, and ACT rinse, and it never fails, I'll have something wrong with my teeth at my next visit, it's rather frustrating...I commonly joke with the dentist, I just need to start all over! hahaha...
