Question Strange night last night...

Strange night last night….

Last night around 10 the boyfriend and I were going to bed and we heard dance music coming from somewhere. You know how music travels through walls, esp. if you’ve lived in an apartment... The “thud, thud, thud, bvvvvmmmmm, thud, thud”. From the sounds of it, it was coming from the apartment downstairs, and from other things we’ve observed, whoever lives there seems a strange lot. I’ve heard the music before, but never as loud as last night. So I’m thinking. “Well, its only 10 o’ clock, I’m sure it will let up in a little while.”

WRONG.

I fall asleep, but wake up later around 12 to hear it still going, louder because the complex is quieter later on at night. The strange thing I noticed about it was that it was the SAME song over and over. It would play and then restart itself like somebody had the same song on repeat all night. Over and over. One of my thoughts is that it could have been like a DVD menu thing? You know how it just loops? Regardless… I’m tossing and turning and stomping my leg on the floor every so often as a Hey, do you mind? Kind of gesture. It made both me and my boyfriend sleep like complete sh*t. I tried to pretend it wasn’t there and tune out but I just couldn’t.

So I guess what I’m getting at is…. it was still going on when I woke up at 6 AM!! The same volume, same song, over and over!! Aside from being annoyed, I’m just a little bit concerned for the person occupying that apartment. I mean, why would somebody leave something running like that all night? It just seems really weird. My boyfriend wrote the apartment complex an email. If it is still going on tonight, I think I’ll have to report it to the apartment complex in person… I can’t go through another night of that, and I also hope nobody has died in the apartment below!

Any thoughts?

I know I try to avoid confrontation, even the healthy/friendly kind, but you really should try knocking on their door. They may or may not answer. I suggest this b/c one of the first things the apt management is going to ask you is if you've spoken w/ the tenant.

We had a very noisy neighbor in our last apt ... same loud bass music. Every time we'd knock on his door he'd never answer it. He either never heard the knock or chose to ignore it out of apathy and/or didn't want to hear our complaint. So each time he wouldn't answer, we'd report him.

Nothing really came of it, other than us moving as soon as our lease was up.

I wish you could screen potential neighbors before moving into an apt complex. It doesn't help either that turnover is so high and your neighbors change frequently.

Good luck!

When we lived in our apartment in JAX there was a girl who lived below us who did something like that. Her alarm would go off at like 5am and keep playing the same country song over and over and over again. It never woke me up but it woke dh up every morning. He was so fed up with it we almost moved our bed into the living room! We let management know and it stopped after that! Of course we had people on the other side of us that had parties until 5am 3 or 4 days a week and that went on the entire time we lived there. Management told us every time, "they only need one more complaint and we can kick them out!" and that never happened. We left before they did.

Good luck! I know that is REALLY annoying. Anything repeating like that is EXTRA annoying to me.

I think that everyone can share bad apartment stories.
When SO was here we lived together and we lived on the bottom. It wasn't too bad but our neighbor upstairs drove us crazy!!! She was hardly ever there but had a dog that stayed in the apartment and would bark all the time. Then she wouldn't walk him she would just put him out on the patio which was obviously above ours so when he did his business up there it would fall/run down to our patio. It got really bad there and he complained to the complex and all she did was put a doggy mat out on her balcony that was a tiny square. I wouldn't go out on the patio because I didn't want anything falling on me. He had a bbq out there are he had just bought it so he was a little protective of it and he came home one night and there was dog crap on it...he freaked out. He was not happy at all. He went and scooped it up and put it in a baggy and took it upstairs to talk to her about it. He pounded on the door and of course she didn't answer so he clipped it onto her door. Who knows what she did with it. Of course it didn't stop until she moved out. I am just glad that we got out of there. The place that we have now is great because it isn't really an apartment complex building. They also rent out townhouses so it is more townhouse then a complex building which is a nice change.

I am sorry that you had to go through that. I know that my SO would have had a huge problem with that. I don't like confrontation either but I don't think it is fair that you put up with that. Hopefully the apartment takes care of it today and you can both have a good night sleep tonight!

Oh that's so frustrating! I actually had a roommate who would never wake up when her alarm went off so I would be stuck waking up to it and hearing it for sometimes what felt like hours. What was even worse was when she would be out of town for the weekend, I'd be trying to sleep in and it would go off early in the morning.. ugh!

I can't stand apartment rudeness - the last place Ian and I lived, the guy downstairs always had this tremendous base reverberating through our floor. I finally went down and asked him to keep it low after 10.

Since we moved to this place three months ago, I've gone to both the downstairs and upstairs neighbors because their volume was too loud. (Really - it was like I was watching their TV in my living room.)

When you live in a house, do what you want, but in an apartment, jeez...have some consideration.

Reading all of your stories, I can't believe how rude people can be (esp the dog shit story from Danielle!!)! I mean, once in a while accidents happen and people get loud or step loudly in apartment complexes... but yeah... some consideration?

Granted, the people we think were playing the music all night are people who leave all of their notices on the door and when we moved in had a stack of about 10 delivered newspapers outside their front door they never took inside. (Some of the apartments here, including ours, have a front and back door).

But that's what you get with people living in such close proximity. People will step on each other's toes once in a while. They funny part is in Michigan we lived in a by FAR crappier apartment than here and never had this problem. But there the cars outside had the bass blasted and my boyfriend got part of his grill stolen from his car... so I guess it balances out...

I'm home now and can't tell if the music is playing because of everyday noises. We will see tonight. I really don't want to call the police or have to go down and say something to the creeps...
