Default Need a reason to feel grateful?

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed and grumpy with the holiday stress (or letdown) keep this family in mind.

Our best friends here started flight school with DH, started dating and married. They are the couple whose charter billionaire guy turned out to be a fraud (see Who are you really flying?) and are having some financial problems and had a new baby boy the day of our horrible ice storm. They decided to drive to Dallas to see his brother and then Virigina to see her family for Christmas. They had a friend that lives nearby take care of the dog and keep an eye on the house.

Last Sunday the housesitter went to feed the dog and found water POURING out of the garage and front door! A pipe had burst in their ceiling, causing the sheetrock of the ceiling in their living and dining room to collapse, filling up the walls of those rooms with water (the insulation acted like a sponge), soaking all the furniture, spewing insulation and drywall everywhere, and flooding the entire first floor (its on a slab) soaking toys, furniture, keepsakes, and anything else that was on the floor.

The guy rented a car and drove up from Dallas, and the woman continued onto VA with the kids. Their middle child has asthma and has had pnuemonia three times already this winter. He can not go back into that house until it is completely fixed. They already found mold on an exterior wall (its cold here so if its growing where its cold its definately growing on the inside of the house where it is warm) and he is allergic to it. He can't be exposed to the drywall dust and probably shouldn't be around new carpet fumes either. And, according to their insurance adjuster:

Their policy doesn't cover mold as a reason to put them up in a hotel! Check your policies and make sure this doesn't happen to you!

So, she'll say in VA for as long as she can stand it but her DH is missing out on the new baby's first weeks and his first Christmas.

It is so sad. That is their HOME. DEVESTATED. Our friend looks so beat. I've had him over for dinner several nights and he came over Christmas eve and the 26th which was our christmas dinner but I feel so badly for them. Of course, they will be okay. They have insurance to fix it and no one was hurt (at least the housesitter wasn't asleep in the living room when that drywall came down on the couch) but it is still an awful experience.

So, count your blessings today and everyday -somebody always has it worse than you.

Jackie

Oh, that is horrible for them...this season tends to bring the worst out in people, but I think that if we all stopped and breathed, we would realize our blessings...Wish the best for your friends, and yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel...
