What do you mean? I own a TDI now... or is this a new car type I'm not aware of?

somewhat still a status symbol yea... but it's turning into a "you want a brand new car.. you could have the 2008 toyota camry with 36,000 mile warranty for the same price as a 2006 3 series bmw with 100,000 mile warranty" type symbol. it's pretty interesting when you actually look at the numbers!

but yea.. it still does imply a high social status even though...

I got a 2008 Prius in October, I got it because I'm a bit of a hippie/treehugger, and because of standard car buying reasons - I liked the car and how it drove, I'm a tech-geek and I liked the technology in it, I like saving gas money, and I liked it *way* more than the other hybrids I tried. The Prius line has been around for a while now (9 years I think), and have had excellent maintenance/track records, plus the resale value is very nice if I ever decide to move on or upgrade. I like that I can play around with it/my drive style and actually work the system and get better milage, too. It's a fun car to drive, which is what I wanted, and it's ecofriendlier, which is what I wanted a lot.

The only complaint I have is my SO is 6'3" and a LOT of his height is in his legs. For whatever reason, despite not being a smaller car than average, the legroom up front is pitiful, and he's cramped. I'm going to look into getting the dealer to move the rails back a bit when I take it in for it's first oil change, so he can be more comfortable in longer drives.

I live in the Seattle area, which is known for it's treehuggers, and maybe as a result I haven't noticed any flak from other drivers. There are a fair number of them around here, they're actually pretty common along with a smattering of other hybrids, so maybe we're all just used to them being around.

I love, and I mean LOVE, my BMW. It's the perfect fit for me. (I hate driving the Pilot - I feel like I'm bad AND driving a schoolbus!) The BMW warranty and the fact that it's THE best car I've ever owned, hard to pass up. That's why I'm trying to get DH to trade-in the Pilot for a Pruis.

I would feel at home in Seattle!!!!

Hybrids are becoming more of the norm here too --probably because Toyota has a plant just down the road.
But it's still not "the car to have" for everyone.

We like the design and the look of the Pruis, plus the resale and maintenence record are pretty good. We've heard that when it comes to hybrid technology, Toyota is the best.
But then again, my brother-in-law has a Honda Accord Hybrid and he loves it.

I just prefer the look of the Pruis better.

In a perfect world BMW would come out with an AFFORDABLE hybrid.
I think my DH said that they're working on a X3 Hybrid, if they can even get one into production this next year, but I'm sure it will be extremely pricey.

I have an Explorer that we just bought a month or so ago, and I love it. It doesn't get much worse gas mileage that my mustang did, either. I personally feel safer in the winter with 4x4, but that's just me. Anyone who has driven a mustang or any rear wheel drive car can understand they do not MOVE in the snow. So since we had that, I wanted to get something more reliable and more all-terrain than the mustang. I looked at saabs since they have 4x4 but my dad will not work on those cars, and he does ALL of my work on my cars for me, so I'm not going to get one of those for that reason. I wanted to get something smaller like an escape, but in our budget an explorere was the best I could get. I'm hoping Honda comes out with a hybrid Ridgeline and I'll get one of those eventually.

Also, no offense to anyone who has/wants a hybrid, but I think they are SO ugly, they look like bubbles. Priuses and even civics are starting to look like bubbles.
