Default Good books?

Anybody read any good books lately? I am a avid reader, always in the middle of book. I have read a couple of great books recently and am always on the lookout for the next one.

My most recent favorite is The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst. It is the story of a guy whose wife has just died and the dog is the only witness. He attempts to teach the dog to talk to find out if his wife committed sucide or had an accident. I know it sounds outlandish, but it is a really good story about the relationship he thought he had with a person who he thought he knew.

Last night I finished off a book called Baby Love by Rebecca Walker. I can't decide if I like it or not. It is the story of a pregnant women working through a troubled relationship with her mother (and the world?). It has some very interesting language and descriptions. Here is one of my favorite passages . . . " When I was in my twenties, my monther told me that she had to decide to love me, that she could have gone either way and she chose to love me. At the time, her words seemed strange, but I had no reference point so I just nodded and felt grateful that she'd made the choice that didn't leave me motherless. . . ."

Right now I have Tami Hoag's Night Sins in my hand. I have just gotten it started. It seems a little slow in the beginning.

Any suggestions on what to add to my reading list?

Oh, I loved "The Dogs of Babel"! (Mostly. Sometimes I thought the narrator sounded like a woman.)

Nelson DeMille's Up Country was fascinating (fun plot with Vietnam history makes for entertaining learning), I just got "Love Warps the Mind a Little" by John Dufresne, which is supposed to be good, and Ian's reading John Irving's "A Widow for One Year." Another must-read is Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried." Anything Tim O'Brien is pretty good, actually.

Then there's the book in my signature.

Right now I'm reading Jeffry Eugenides, "Middlesex" for the 2nd time. It's a book about a sister and brother from Greek who immigrate to Detroit in the 1920s and the family they have (they marry each other... INCEST!). There's a lot about the auto industry and the narrarator is a hermaphrodite. Quite interesting!

Anything by John Irving is quite brilliant in my opinion.

My favourite book of ALL TIME is probably Penelope Lively's "Moon Tiger"... I can't describe how great this book is.

I have just whizzed through the Thursday Next series and can't recommend them enough! By a guy called Jasper Fforde. They're set in England but apparently they have a bit of a cult following in the US, and they're available on Amazon. The first one is The Eyre Affair. However I try and explain it will make them sound completely bonkers (heroine can go inside books, time travel, literary detectives...) but honestly, I haven't read anything I've enjoyed as much in ages!

I'm in the middle of two books right now. One is "If Dogs Prayers Were Answered, Bones would Rain from the Sky". Awesome!

The other is "Team of Rivals" which chronicles President Lincoln's choice of cabinet members, almost all of whom were his political rivals while running for various positions, including President. It is fascinating, not written like a typical history book. Lots of fun facts I never knew about the man. Great read!

I just reaf "something borrowed" by Emily Giffen and I really liked it. I also read "Baby Proof" by the same author. She has another book out that I am trying to get ahold of, but the library here doesn't have it.

Also, any Jennifer Weiner books. I have read them all and loved them. The Nanny Diaries is good, too, I can't wait to see the movie. Those are all chick lit so I guess you have to like those kind of books.
