Is it even possible to drive in one or do you need to wait it out? If you wait it out, on average, how long until it passes through -- minutes, hours, days?

It depends on where you ARE in the dust storm!
If you are deep in the middle you have to treat it like like a heavy heavy rain- pull over as soon as you can until you can see. I've only been caught in a few where it just became dark and dusty - I could still drive safely.

I went to school at Texas Tech in West Texas and we used to have dust storms like that. I will never forget my first time to walk across campus to class in a huge dust storm. It was like being sand blasted! Not fun at all!
