Default Ever sold a car?

I'm finally getting ready to sell the BMW SUV.. it's time for that puppy to GO!

So, I'm gonna get her fixed up in the next month and then out on the sale block.

Has anyone ever tried selling a car to just random people? I'm not trading it in because i won't get nearly the price i should. Just wondering if you've ever used a service like auto trader and/or craigslist to sell the car....if you've used a certain type of payment process (all cash, money order, escrow.com) and how it all worked out. I know there are a ton of scumbags out there wanting to steal your car and money, i just don't know how they operate and what to watch out for.

thanks!

Yup, we've sold the nissan 350z through the paper. Also put ads in specialty magazines. When we've purchased our porsches, we went through a specialty magazine and even searched a craigs list. We sold the z and received "cash" it was a check from the bank. The buyer took out a loan to pay us. We paid cash "cash"for ours.

The only thing with having it in the paper is that you'll get all kinds of phone calls and people wanting to look at the car. THEN, you have the people that want to "test" drive your car. That can get scary. We always made photo copies of their d.l before they left the driveway.

I'm trying to think what else I'm missing to tell you. It'll come to me later or just ask me.
It really isn't hard, and nelive me, you WILL get more than at a trade it.

We sold an acura and a lexus all through the newspapers, and it worked out great. We did not get a lot of strange people calling. We sold both to single women looking for cars.

We've sold a few on Craigslist- an Explorer, a Focus and a couple motorcycles. Both times it was really easy. I remember with the Explorer, the guy asked us to drop it off at a dealer so he could have it inspected, but it wasn't really a hassle for us to do that and he paid for it.

I would only take cash or a cashier's check, especially for an expensive vehicle. Even money orders can be faked these days. We made copies of people's drivers licenses and verified that they had insurance when they test drove. Aaron also drove with the person if he could.

I sold a car a few years ago with AutoTrader and had no problems at all! The only thing that you need to worry about when listing online is to beware of the nigerian scammers on there... I did have one try to send me a fake check... had quite a bit of fun with that guy and it turned out to be a great story. He said that he needed the car for the "motherless baby home" in London. Like he was really going to buy my $1300 POS car and have it shipped over there sight unseen? I don't think so!!

Sorry, gave you way more info than needed, haha. I was just adding on to what others have said.

Have you considered taking it to CarMax? They buy cars, and you do not have to purchase a car there to sell one to them.

I'm sure you would not get quite as much selling to them as you may get selling to a private party, BUT there's zero hassle involved. Just show up, they'll look it over and you can walk out a few minutes later with the money. Depends on how much hassle you're willing to go through with buyers.

Also, you could go to CarMax, get a quote, not sell it right away and see what sorts of offers you get from private parties. If it turns out selling to a private party is becoming irritating, you know exactly how much CarMax will give you.

sold my car last year. Got cash for it. Had it advertised in out local newspaper. FYI, from an insurance standpoint, be very careful who you let "test drive" your car. If you give them permission, you as the "owner" are held liable for any damges done to other property and or persons. (if the test driver is at fault ofcourse)
