Default Diets

So, I am looking for a diet that will let me lose about 15 pounds. I know, we're all looking for that diet right?? If anyone knows of any diets that actually work, or that have worked for them, please let me know. I want to lose about 15 pounds for my wedding in September. I want to look the best I can in my dress. Although my fiance assures me that I don't need to lose a pound, I know how I look. I told him today that I think I need to go on a diet and he about bit my head off. I just want to feel comfortable standing in front of everybody at the wedding. And right now I don't think I will. So, if anyone knows of a diet that actually works without me having to starve myself, that would be awesome!!

eDiets.com is pretty good. It basically helps you plan your meals based on what you like in a way that ensures you eat a balanced and reasonably sized meal. You know - it kinds of acts as a parent.

And once you get used to eating the balanced and properly portioned meals, you find it's hard to eat the crap anymore - at least, not without feeling like you're just not being good to yourself. I can't tell you the last time I had a hamburger (any burgers I eat are turkey burgers - not only are they half the fat/grease, but they're SO much tastier).

Naturally, it works better if you combine the better eating with exercise. I lost about 10-15 lb using it, and a friend lost 40.

Ooh - and you never feel like you're starving. It's not about not eating - it's about eating better. I used to eat pasta pasta pasta and some ice cream and maybe a sausage and bagel sandwich.

Now I eat chicken with rice and a salad, or a steak and a salad, or chicken and veggie shishkabobs - no problem "maintaining" the weight because I never stopped eating. I've been at my ideal weight for the last year and a half.

I'm a SouthBeach person--low fat and right carbs. It's not a diet--it's a lifestyle. But I'm also a Strong Women person (StrongWomen.com - Your Virtual Trainer with Dr. Miriam Nelson)--weight lifting and aerobic exercise combined with the right foods.

South Beach is basically the same - eating better and in moderation.

(Have you seen the commercials that say "Eat exactly what you've been eating, don't exercise, and lose weight by taking these pills!" ? I can't decide if they make me laugh or disgust me. I mean, come ON. Ann Curry had it right yesterday on the Today Show when she was discussing the magic "Drink milk and lose weight" concept...she said, "No one wants to do what it really takes, which is eat healthy and exercise.")

I'm doing Dr. Oz's (Oprah's doctor) soy protein shakes for breakfast and sometimes lunch. The protein shake is soy protein powder(vanilla flavor - 1 scoop), 1/2 banana, 1/4c blueberries, 8 oz. H2O, 1/2T flax seed oil, 1/2 T honey, and 1/2t of psycillum seed husk for fiber. Put it into a blender and blend until smooth. It make 2 servings so I have the other half for lunch. I try to have a sensible dinner and have snacks of fruit or veggies a couple times each day. Sugar only on weekends (Doesn't always work but I try).

As of this morning I've lost about 10 lbs. BUT I'm also walking 1.5-2 miles per day and doing Pilates when I can't walk.

Good luck!!!!!

I've been finding that getting off the caffeine and carbonated beverages along with some good exercise during the week is helping me. i haven't gotten to where i can control portion quite yet but i am picking better choices and sometimes it's the will to get something done that will help you do it.

but i did use ediets before too a few years ago and it was great at giving you meal plans to go by.

Those shakes sound yummy!

I think I'd miss the "real" food, though. Or the variation, anyway.

Here's what I've been eating pretty religiously:

English muffin w/butter and jelly for breakfast

About 300-ish calories for lunch (Lean Cuisine or South Beach or Healthy Choice)

Regular dinner (usually a white meat with a ricey food and a vegetable)

220 calorie Smart Ones chocolate cake for dessert (yum!)

It's served me quite well! To LOSE the weight (before the maintaining stage) I walked 3.5 miles every morning in about 40-45 minutes and did the healthy eating stuff.

Three miles of fast-walking in Alabama ain't no joke, y'all!

Nick bites my head off too when I use the word "diet"! I'm really petite so I gain weight very easily. I think it's all about strengthening as opposed to just losing the lbs. It's also about changing your eating habits.

If exercise doesn't excite you try something 'different'. I got hooked on kickboxing and got a lot stronger and lost weight. It didn't feel like I was even working out! In PA I don't have my kickboxing class so I started running and will be working towards a 5k race.

I also ate a smoothie shake for 1 meal a day- nothing but frozen fruit, low sugar orange juice and pure honey (MUCH better than sugar). From what I've read my sugar addiction is making me gain weight and if I could just stop eating it I would probably lose some!

Remember that starving yourself won't make you lose weight in the long term. Your body will start storing more fat since it is being starved. Don't do diet pills- I tried them a while back and they made me nutso. The best thing is to remember portions- use a small plate and don't eat seconds. It's also better to eat many small meals during the day than skipping some. Good luck!

I've been thinking about joining Weight Watchers or something. But that costs money!

I think one trick of eating better is not eating out so much... I have a bad habit of eating out and at restaurants they give you big portions and when there is food in front of me, I always want to eat it all! (the Seefood diet).

I'm with your fiancee... I think you look just fine.
