Default Webcam questions

Nick was in Dublin this morning and we were IM-ing. We IM a lot when he is away since Int'l phone rates are a little too expensive. He brought up the webcam idea. We've talked about it in the past but now I think we want to invest in them so we can see each other while he's out of the country.

If you have a webcam, what should I look for? I don't want the picture to be too grainy or there to be too much delay Any brands I should look for? Any help is appreciated! I'm checking eBay b/c the prices are great, but I don't know exactly what I should be buying.

BTW I know we had a thread on this a month back (I did a search) but nobody ever gave the technical info!

Thanks!

WE have one from Creative Labs, I think the model is VF0050. That's what the back says. I like it, it's about 2 years old. The picture is good and it has a clip thing to clip it to a flat panel screen (as opposed to having to balance it or use some kind of sticky tape. As far as speed, you'll want to make sure you have a fast internet connection b/c that's what makes it possible. Dial up will make it slower to send/receive the data stream.

I've never personally shopped for one but I think the things to look for are:
how does it stick to your computer?
does it have a zoom in/out feature (makes it easier to focus as opposed to having to move the camera)?
what are the light requirements?
how many pixels?- more is better, but more is also expensive
does it also capture still pics?- what if you want to create a pic of your great smile...

Hubby and I both got new laptops back in Jan and when we did we also got webcams. Needless to say his is still in the box. We got ours at best buy for 99.00 neach and they are from logitech. I set mine up and the pic is very clear!

Mine came with the computer my grandpa handed down to me when I went to college about 5 years ago. It says "intel" on it, but that's all I know. It's probably about 6-7 years old. It's a GREAT camera, looks good with any light, never pixelated, can zoom in and out. Never been unhappy with it.
