| Skyrocketocelot, I was thinking of you the other day. I'm taking chemistry right now in prep for nursing school, and we are studying mol ratios/equations. I don't know what that has to do with iron smelting, but there was an inset in the chapter that talks all about the process and the different chemical that are involved/removed in the process. I know you said you work in copper smelting, but it sounded like it was pretty much the same process. It was the "slag" that called to mind this conversation. Actually, that gives me an idea for my extra credit paper topic. I've been trying to figure out what I want to write it about. It only has to be 1200 words, so I don't need to be an expert on it or anything. Does your company put out any brochures or such on the process and what substances are being removed or added that I might use as a source for my paper? |

| Yep, slag crops up in a lot of metal melting processes. IMO, it's really an interesting reaction, chemically speaking! http://www.phelpsdodge.com/AboutUs/W...zona_Miami.htm is off our website and might help trigger some ideas. It's not real indepth about it but it's our overall process. http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembo...ersmelter.html is not our process but it's similar - we use an ISA vessel, not just the electric furnace. Holler at me if you need more info, I'd be more than happy to explain what I can I could also email you pics if that'd help any. Enjoy!! |
