Default Airtran wants Midwest Express

Is there something in the water this week or what? Saw this on another board but not sure how to put the link up. It was on CNN Money.

Here's the NY Times version:

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/busi...=1&oref=slogin

It's not in the water--since the US Airways attempt, it prompted others to act. Everyone has been saying that there is no need for six legacies--that it will be down to three soon.

This United/CAL potential has some excited. DH's cousin who has bypassed recall at United would take a recall if it happened. He says the consensus is with that approach.

And the Reuters version:

NEW YORK, Dec 12 (Reuters) - AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI.N: Quote, Profile , Research) is preparing to make an offer for Midwest Air Group Inc. (MEH.A: Quote, Profile , Research), according to a story in The Wall Street Journal Online on Tuesday.
The possible merger of the two airlines indicates that consolidation pressure has extended beyond the major airlines, the Journal said.
Both The New York Times Web site and The Journal Online site reported that UAL Corp. (UAUA.O: Quote, Profile , Research) and Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL.N: Quote, Profile , Research) were holding talks on a possible merger.
Neither UAL nor Continental could be reached.

The Journal said that AirTran in the next few days is expected to publicly disclose a recent $200 million offer made to Midwest's management.
AirTran, a discount full-service carrier operating mainly through Orlando and Atlanta hubs, has been pursuing Midwest for more than a year, the Journal said, quoting people familiar with the matter, but was rejected in its most recent approach earlier this month.
A Midwest spokeswoman declined to comment. AirTran could not be immediately reached for comment.

We need to pray that the CAL merger does NOT happen. Nick worked hard to get to CAL, and we don't want this all thrown away. It would be devastating for us!

I know it's tough Amanda. DH's cousin has been furloughed from United since 2003. His other cousin has been furloughed from Delta since 2001. Add this to numerous friends in the industry. In this industry it's luck and timing. Nothing else seems to matter. They all work hard--some have the luck and timing, some don't. It's sad.

All I can say is...this industry is absolutely crazy.

From what I hear through the Air Wisconsin grapevine, Air Wisconsin has been talking with Midwest for quite some time now, I'm not sure really what is going on but then again who does?
The informtaion that I find interesting however is on August 1, 2006, Air Wisconsin hired James Rankin from Skyway Airlines as their new president and chief executive officer. (Skyway Airlines does business as Midwest Connect, a regional carrier for Midwest Airlines. Both Skyway and Midwest Airlines are owned by Midwest Air Group Inc.) Not that this bit of information means absolutely anything I just thought it was interesting. This industy NEVER gets old does it?

So it seems that Air Wisconsin's efforts and talking for several months with Midwest was just that...talk. DH received word today through Air Wisconsin that Skywest will take Midwest's flying. Like I mentioned in an earlier post this industry is absolutely crazy!
