My son went to Space Camp in FL. I was so jealous and wanted to stay. Anyway, it was a coincidence that there was a launch that week. So the kids got VIP passes and went out to see it. When he told me about what they were doing, I was completely jealous then!

When did he go? Maybe I was there! We took the kids to the launch site a few times for launches!

LOL, my son will be 22 on Wednesday! He went in 1995. Unless you were one of the hot teenagers working there....but they were all college kids.

how funny!! doesn't stuff like this make the world feel so much smaller?

So Robyn, what do you have to do to be an Educator Mission Specialist? I'm assuming there's all sorts of hoops to jump through?

I had to apply just like any astronaut would...they just started this position in January of 2003 (right before the Columbia disaster). They had special requirements as to degrees (math, science), letters of rec (students, parents, principals, community), essay's......just to name a few. They only choose 3 people from the thousands (I am not sure how many, I heard as many as 8-10) that applied. I think because I had only 3 years of teaching experience when I applied, I was probably weeded out sooner (they have a resume program that assigned points to your resume....so they really don't know you unless you get that far). So far they say they will open up the astronaut pool again in early 2007, but that is only if they need new candidates. The average astronaut applies at least 4-5 times (they only take about 15-20 every 2-4 years) so I am not discouraged If it is meant to be, it will happen at some point!
