http://finance.news.com.au/story/0,10166,12407978-31037,00.html

Even happens at the world's most profitable airline...

The link isn't working. Is it back room staff or operations or both?

I got it to work... the link doesn't have the entire html tag in it

http://finance.news.com.au/story/0,1...-31037,00.html

this will probably work better and below is the actual article: it doesn't say where the jobs will come from - if they do cut.

Review may cost job: Qantas
March 01, 2005
From: AAP
QANTAS Airways Ltd has confirmed it is reviewing its costs and workforce across the entire company, but says it is too early to speculate that it could axe 10 per cent of its workforce in the next two years.

Qantas spokesman Michael Sharp said a report today that 3000 workers could be retrenched in a new efficiency drive were premature.
But he confirmed every area of the company would be examined for further savings in an expansion of a $500-million-a-year cost-cutting program.

Unions today reacted angrily to the reports, saying constant speculation about job cuts was having a devastating effect on staff morale.

Senior executives at Qantas are in the midst of the new costs review, which is a response to increasing competition.

Qantas is the world's most profitable airline.

It produced a net profit of $458.4 million in the first half of this year, which was up 28.1 per cent despite a tighter global airline market.

Mr Sharp said it would build on Qantas "Sustainable Future Program", which aims to save $500 million a year.

The program produced efficiencies of $245 million in the first six months of this financial year.

"Qantas announced two weeks ago at the half-year result that it was conducting a review of all its processes and activities that would take at least three months," Mr Sharp said.

"The review has been going for only two weeks, so it's obviously premature to talk about what the exact outcome will be."

Mr Sharp said the aim was to identify processes that could be "removed or redesigned", and the review was also a response to historically high oil prices.

Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon met employee representatives last week, but gave no indication of big job losses.

However, in January there were reports that the company was seeking to shift about 7000 staff ñ or more than 20 per cent of its workforce ñ overseas.

So far, Qantas has announced that 400 flight attendants will be based overseas.

Linda White, assistant national secretary of the Australian Services Union which represents about 30 per cent of Qantas' workers, said unions would fight any wholesale redundancies at Qantas.

She said under the airline's enterprise agreement, the company always had to pursue redeployments before retrenchments.

Ms White said Qantas should be open and honest about its plans, rather than spread fear among the workforce through leaks to the media.

"From our point of view, this constant barrage of attacks on job security in an airline where they have risen to the occasion at every turn is designed to put the workforce on edge all the time," she said.

"When is enough enough?

"This is the most successful airline in the world, and the workers have risen to the occasion every time.

"You can't fault them but the company attacks them at every turn and you can't blame the staff if morale is low."

Reports today said the airline also would reconsider whether individual businesses such as Qantas Holidays and Qantas Catering should be spun off through sharemarket listings, and whether maintenance and IT divisions should be closed or sold.

Ms White said 30 staff were made redundant from Qantas Holidays last week.

Thanks for making it work - I tried several times and couldn't fathom it (plus didn't know the rules on posting others content).
