US Airways pilots OK 18% pay cut

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published on: 10/22/04

ARLINGTON, Va. ó US Airways' pilots union ratified a new labor contract that will cut their base pay by 18 percent and save the airline $300 million a year.

The airline hopes a ratified pilots deal will give it momentum as it seeks cuts from its three other major unions, representing machinists, flight attendants and passenger service workers.

US Airways says it needs about $950 million in annual cuts from all unions to have any chance at survival.

The ratification of pilot cuts at US Airways follows a tentative pay cut agreement earlier this week at Northwest Airlines. United and American also have cut pilot pay as old-line airlines struggle to streamline costs so they can compete in an era of Internet fare wars and discount competition.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is in talks with its union concerning a long-sought deal to slash pilot costs by $1 billion annually. Union leaders say the talks will extend into the weekend and that they will meet Monday at national headquarters in Washington to review progress.

In the US Airways vote, the Air Line Pilots Association said that 1,690 pilots, or 58 percent, voted for the contract, with 1,236 against.

The Pittsburgh and Philadelphia units rejected the agreement, with 52 and 54 percent in opposition, respectively. But the union's four smaller units ó based in Charlotte, Washington, Boston and New York ó all voted for the contract.

geez.. i really don't think gate agents and reservationists really make that much money as stated in the article.. i would think most are on minimum salary or wouldn't it even be ferried out to "outsourced" areas by now? people can't work for free.. if they start asking for lower than $25K per year, i could see people flying away at that point....it'd be easier to go out and work for McD's or the king!

Actually they do make that much. Don't forget most of the people still at USAirways are senior since they got rid of the lower paid ones by furlough. I think management really wants them to quit. In fact it seems to me they really just want the entire company to go Chapter 7!

The CWA is asking members to authorize a strike if the contract is abrogated in court:

It is my understanding that if the contract is abrogated, then they have the right to strike and the judge doesn't have the right to order them back to work. I think the President does for a 30 day period.
