[quote=Mrs.Alchemist;66771]Okay, I do have something to say, and that is that there are always other options. Cobra can be very expensive, and unemployment doesn't always cover the bills. We use to go on unemployment every year, durning the winter, and we would have straved if we would have had to pay bills with it. I wonder how tall the soap boxes would be if it was your house that was being forclosed on, your family that wasn't eating, your power that was being shut off. these are hard times, I know of so many people being laid off, in all fields of work, and alot of people are struggling to find work. Its easy to say that he could go work at walmart, or burger king, but walmart is cutting back and alot of other places just simply aren't hiring.

Can I ask a question without it having imposed intentions on it? I'm not asking this to give another question like "well, did you try THIS?" This is really out of PURE CURIOUSITY because DF and I check airlinepilotcentral.com every single week just in case something happens to his job at Piedmont. We always want to be up to date on who is hiring/who is furloughing/who is paying what/etc/etc. Anyway- Danish, did your husband or anyone else who is reading this - try applying to Great Lakes? I'm not sure where you're based, but I noticed that they both have a base in STL. I know their pay is prob the worst in the industry, but it does say they are hiring and I was just curious if you guys had any experience with them.

Alot of small airlines that like require you to live at the base. If you own a house, you can't sell it right now, so what are you to do? You'll have to carry two homes on a what? 15, 16 thousand dollar a year job? A job like that would only work if you were able to just pack up and leave where you are. Moving in itself can cost thousands of dollars. At least with gojets, he could commute and they could stay where they are. Every family is different. We're not inside their homes, we're not inside their heads. It's easy to stand back and judge and say why didn't you do this, when you're not the one going through it. When you are going through it, the only thing you can think about is surviving. And in this economy, it's survival of the fittest and smartest. Grab what you can, when you can because it's only going to get worse.

Is this in response to what I asked about Great Lakes? I said it was out of pure curiousity because if DF gets furloughed I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with them. And, they wouldn't have to move to go to Great Lakes, because GJ and Great Lakes are both based in STL and thats where they are based anyway with GJ.

I don't have all the details on Great Lakes but from what DH remembers it's referred to as "Great Mistakes" LOL! I know the pay is SUPER low (not enough to support a family) and I'm not sure, but I think they only have limited jumpseat agreements (don't quote me on that). ETA: I heard they have JS with United and Frontier As far as basing, even if two companies have the same base it doesn't mean anyone can work there. GL could possibly have short callouts requiring living in base as opposed to commuting (not sure, just throwing that out there). I also heard that for training you have to pay your own way to/from DEN and they don't pay you during training and they also don't pay for your hotel during training. So you could spend thousands of dollars out of your own pocket just to get through training only to make $17,000/yr. Not sure what else, but that's just what i've heard. Hope that helps. |

Thanks. Just curious. I know the pay is awful, just curious what the hiring process is like. I know that you do have to pay for training...we've had our eye on Mountain Air, Great Lakes, USA 3000 (which is furloughing now), and we've also always kept flight instructing in the back of our minds. Just wondering if Great Lakes should be off the option list. We have this funny screen saver about regionals...I think it said something like Great Mistake on it as well...lol. Anyway, thanks for the info.

No problem. My DH is always on airlinepilotcentral.com too checking his options in case his current job ends. I didn't realize how much (other than pay/basing) really needs to be factored into these decisions. DH made a spreadsheet once of all the places he'd want/be willing to go if he gets furloughed. It started out to be a long list but once we did more research it was widdled down to a very few. And it's not that we're picky, my DH would bend over backward to keep us afloat but so many of them either weren't stable (constantly hiring then furloughing) or didn't pay you through training plus paid crappy even after, or the second year pay wasn't that much better than first year pay. We could've sucked it up for a year, but in some cases it would take him 4+ years to get back to what he's making now (which isn't much, we live a fairly meager lifestyle). And one of them were famous for hiring you for an FO position and then telling you in training that they're making you and FE (Champion -which is now gone). I'm just telling you this because as we've learned over the years, APC is a great resource but ALWAYS try to get first hand information about a company before applying (as you've done - good work!). Hope that helps! |

Hm. Interesting. The other reason I try to get additional info is because I know they're not always recently updated. Sometimes what is posted on there is a few months old. I really wouldn't want to pay for training. I think at this point, if he gets furloughed we'd prob try a few places but weigh non-airline options a little more until things start looking up again. We'd love to go back to school someday soon as well. DF would love to be a av.prof at purdue or somewhere of the likes.

Didn't mean to hack this thread. Maybe it's a good thing we got a tiny bit off topic anyway.
