United Furloughs

Well, while jump seating back to base, Hubby was speaking with a United pilot who just heard today that United will be furloughing 950 people (after summer)!!!! YIKES!

(It was really sad for this pilot, of course, especially because he had been with Trans States for several years and just went to United a year ago)

We have a really close friend who just got on board with United this last year. This rumor has been going around for a while... it's really going to be a setback.

CHICAGO - United Airlines says it will eliminate about 950 pilot jobs beginning this summer in addition to an already announced plan to cut 1,600 salaried positions and reduce its fleet.

DH just heard it could go back to '99 hires.....

Well, my DH is April 2000 hire and is only about 450 from the bottom - so I would imagine it will go back beyond 1999 if they are cutting 950 jobs.

I am so sorry to hear about the furloughs

99 hires...that is unreal.

Yeah, fiance just did some quick math. For a non-growing airline, they usually take on about 10 new hires a month ... that's 120 per year. 1999 was 9 years ago ... so that's 1080 pilots. That's more or less the number United has announced.

Of course, that 10 new hires a month is just an approximation.

Yeah my bf was saying that it would probably go back 10 years. That really stinks for those families and pilots. Hopefully it won't go that far back.
