agreed...

as i understand, you can only fly for hire so many hours per week/month/year legally. At least i know under part 135 this is the case. But i suppose if you keep it under those minimums it wouldn't be an issue.

My dh just retired from his second job. He was a Reservist and it is a great PT job, except for the risk of deployments.

Could your dh pick up some extra flying at his primary job? That is what dh does when we need a little extra cash. I don't know about the other airlines but at SWA you can make as much/ or as little as you desire. It all depends on how much you wish to be home.

Hang in there Mollie. It will get better!

My DH is a Stay at Home Dad while on reserve. It doesn't generate any extra income, but saves us a bit of daycare expense. We still have to pay for daycare for when he gets called to fly.

First year FO pay, student loans due, infant in daycare and living in California. Ugh. I don't know how we do it - but so far it's all worked out. Glad I have a decent jon!!!
Only 4 1/2 months til 2nd year pay. Yay.

Hang in there Mollie, we'll get through this & one day they'll make the big bucks ;-)

I love student loans, especially his . Seriously though, even though 1st yr FO pay was crap, Jason didnt get a second job. I have a great job and and we bought a house for 130,000 and combined his 90,000 into the home loan. So we just pay one payment a month for both. It probably depends on where you live, we live in New Bedford, MA, so living here are so-so.

Hmmmm, that's something to think about!! Obviously Fiance and I can't afford a house out here in California. But when we do buy a house some day, presumably back east somewhere, we can think about folding his loan into our home loan. I never thought of that ...

It helps on the interest rate. Jason couldnt consalidate his student loan so it was like 9.5% rate and the house was like 6.5%. So instead of paying like 2000 a month for the seperate we only play 1675 combined.

Mollie,

I am not sure of your airline, but ex-jet does have a clause about flying outside x-jet.not sure of the details exactly, but my husband and I had the same talk awhile back. He also said something about if something would happen with a student, he would be risking his main career. Obviously, it is not worth it to us to risk our income.

As far as loans, you can get a deferment for a year or so due to hardship. We did this when my husband was on 1 and 2 year pay. After that, we asked for a minimum payment amount until we could afford more. Did someone mention 9 percent on a student loan? That seems extrememly high. You should be able to find somewhere to transfer it at a fixed rate of about 3.5 (or close to that). Also, they give you additional breaks if you have it electronically debited every month, making it even a smaller percentage.

As far as side jobs, I know a lot who consult with computers, realtors, tax consultants, etc. After my boys get older, we talked about a lawn business that my husband and boys could do together when he is home and they could still do when he is on trips. I would like the landscapping aspect with the girls (they are more into flowers). Does your husband have a trade that he does well? For instance, he could do side jobs like painting, handy-man work, etc.?

I feel for you. We were there at one point, along with my oldest being in and out of the hospital, medications, etc. You will get through it, and look back and wonder how you guys did it.

Good luck on what you decide. If it is something in aviation, I would be sure your husband double checks with the company first.

I talked to Jason about this and he siad with ASA when he signed the contract to said that he cannt do anything involve side job flying, becuase of the 1000 hrs a year. As far as anything else, they dont mind so long as it donesnt conflict with his shedule.

Regina, that was us. I thought so too, but Jason didnt have an awesome Credit Score at the time he took out the loan. We bought a house and combined the loan left on the house and his student loans to make a cheaper payment. My studnet loans are defered b/c I am in school still and I consalidated them to a 4.5% instead of the 6 or 7 I had.
