Default Postive Space Thanksgiving Travel

What do you guys think?

Hubby has to report for a 9:00 am show on Thanksgiving Day. He is nervous about trying to get to base on the day before Thanksgiving. He is considering buying a postive space ticket, just in case. Of course the ticket would be expensive, and he thinks the ticket would be transferable but not refundable (he is going to check into that a bit more) if he didn't use it.

wouldn't the ticket be more expensive than just flying out a day or two ahead and having a hotel room?

I would think flying even a day or two before he's due to report in would be cheaper but it's a time vs money issue, so you have to do what's best for your families situation.

I wonder if he can't buy a discounted fare considering he's an employee and all... does he have the opportunity to buy discounted fares?

if he does decide to go that route, it would be in your best interest to make sure it's refundable.

I have no idea if it apply to jumperseating, (I wouldn't think so but....) we have embargo dates ( basicly balcakout dates) on Wed and Sund, that we can't reserve travel. He may want to check into that too.

embargo dates are only for the friends and family (buddy passes).

I'm not sure if embargo dates include spouses on other airlines, but i know it doesn't on ours.

Is there a way he can reserve the jumpseat ahead of time? i know at DAL, you can reserve the jumpseat 3 days ahead by calling a particular phone number.

Reserving the jumpseat? Hum, I didn't know that you could do that.

I had the start time a bit wrong, actually supposed to be there 6:00am.

He has decieded to start trying to get home earlier. So sad to see him go a moment before he has too, but this time I think it might be necessary. Besides the addional chances of flights, he has checked the freight flights at a nearby airport. And we talked about if worst comes to worst he could drive and still make it. (Driving not ideal situation because 7hrs, not much sleep before work, cost of gas, and he would end up with 2 cars at base until he drove one home.)

I know every pilot must worry about these kind of situations, but hubby stresses over them until we come up with a zillion backup plans and he drives me crazy.

Is it possible for your husband to jumpseat on a cargo plane? Like FedEx or UPS or otherwise?

My boyfriend has commuted on UPS when he was in PHL. They had a flight leave PHL for DTW at 3 something in the morning and get in around 5.

I'm worried about this too! DH starts a trip on wed. and I'm concerned he won't be able to get back on tuesday. If all the seats in the back are full, more commuters will be fighting for the jumpseat. I told him not to bother coming home (as it's already monday), but the decision is up to him.

He has a nice long break off after T-day though, so I know I'll get to see him then.

We really lucked out with Thanksgiving... Brian found a trip that has a long overnight in BWI, (and he'll commute in on Tuesday night) so he doesn't have to worry about getting on the flights with the crazy holiday travel - he'll be flying, so they can't leave without him!

K- I don't think loads will be too bad tomorrow, but Wednesday might be tough.

kat- Hope that all works out with your DH... commuting is so stressful! Fortunately the drive is only 3.5 hours if he has to do it, but it can be a lot worse depending on traffic.

I would tell him to double check all of the jumpseat agreements first. As other's mentioned, he might be able to get out on a cargo carrier. My DH is the CASS coordinator for the cargo company he flys for and I am surprised how many agreements they have with regionals.

Kalitta does have an agreement with CHQ (that's who your DH works for, right?) but I have no idea if they'll be in TN on that day and/or if they'd be going to OH (I highly doubt it) but the point is, check ALL the airlines, not just the passenger carriers.

Is he able to sit in the cockpit? It leaves alot more options open to him if he is.

Good luck! And i'm sorry he has to work on Thanksgiving!
